Cloth Diapering

How much is too much? and poll.

I currently have 21 diapers in my rotation, and will be getting at least 3 more in the mail next week, and I am still looking at more.

When have I crossed the line in having too many diapers?

How many are in your rotations?

Re: How much is too much? and poll.

  • You definitely haven't crossed the line yet. Having 24 is the safe number and should be a minimum so that you you're doing fewer, larger loads. That saves on time, and water/energy.

Too many would be if you have diapers that you never use before your baby outgrows that size. When you concider that you might find certain diapers work better for different clothes, and different times of the day, I'd say that you really never need more than 40.

But some people collect things and diapers are no different.  I have customers who come in weekly to buy a new colour/pattern, or the newest brand, just to try them out.  Never be embarrased to have too many cloth diapers.

  • I have about the same as you, but some I'm not big on and would like to replace.  I see no problem in getting more, especially if they are cute ones - and especially in the warmer months when babies can go w/o pants, they basically serve as shorts, so really you are just buying some stylish bottoms for your LO.  That's the excuse I use at least, and it's worked so far!

  • I'm not one to advise on "too much". haha! I've lost count but I'd say I have at least 60 diapers (not including the newborn stash). I need to count them up.

I've recently sold some but I am buying more so its not as if I'm downsizing. Honestly, while it is not necessary, I love having a big stash. When I do laundry, I take my time and don't have to worry about running out of diapers. I have a mix of lots of different kinds and brands and I love it!

I say, as long as your DH doesn't cut you off - there is no such thing as "too much". :)

  • I have 52 (that I can think of right off) diapers plus 12 prefolds.  I have 30 pockets for MIL, 12 pockets for DH, and 10 fitteds for me.

  • I have at least 60 I think (but thats including prefolds that i never use).  I only have about 15 or so fitteds that get heavy use. I am selling off some pockets/AIOs to buy more fitteds.

  • I have about 24 pockets, which I think are enough.  It definitely gets me through two days and I have to wash every other day anyway unless I want to do two loads at a time.  I like to keep the loads on the smaller side so everything can really agitate and rinse well.

I keep buying though, because DD goes to child care and I like to be able to leave a few diapers there and not worry about packing 5 or 6 each day.

  • I think too many is when you have diapers you never use.  I have about 24 and would really like to have more, but I'm cheap so I keep putting off buying them lol

  • I had 24 when it was just DD.  I bought 8 more when DS was about 3 months old because it just wasn't enough.  So, I have 32 for 2 kids but DD only wears them for bed/nap.

Not to mention they are WAY over priced.  They are selling BG 4.0 with snaps for $24.00!  Normally they are like $17-19.

  • I probably have 45 (just diapers) and probably only use 40 of them in regular rotation (I need to sell off a few). We could have gotten away with a lot less but I feel like I have 2 different systems. I have about half AIOs or AI2s for when we're out & about.. and the other half are pre-folds and fitteds for when she's home. I have a handful of pockets that we throw in the mix occassionally.

I use my 2 dollar prefolds just as often as I use my 22 dollar fitteds. I'd like to think having more will make them wear less since you're using/washing each diaper less frequently. I also like variety and I like to try new things! :)
