Cloth Diapering

Laundry frustration

I have been doing laundry almost every day.  My LO goes through up to 22 diapers (in a 24 hour period).  I finally took a formal count yesterday.  I started with 30 in my stash and have been working up to 40.

Anyways, I have crazy hard well water even though we have a softener.  I have been using RnG hard rock.  At first I wasn't using enough because they were smelling a little funky when she peed (and believe me she does not sit in her diapers.  She has zero tolerance for a wet dipe).  After upping to 2 Tbsp. in my HE front loader her natural fiber diapers and even synthetic wipes have started to get crustier.  The other day she was in a prefold without a fleece liner and she had to red spots that could have been an ammonia burn.  It took a day or two to resolve.

So now what?  Do I strip?  I had been running a cold wash without spin, hot and heavy wash with extra rinse.  This took a total of 3.5 hours to run.  Do I have to add another cycle at the end to rinse?  I'm starting to get a little nervous. I have to return to work in 6 weeks.  Laundry may become my other part time job!

Re: Laundry frustration

  • I think 2tbsp may be too much soap. I do 1 tbsp in my front loader with hard well water.  I would not strip just rinse them really well a couple of times and see if that resolves the rash issue.  IDK about the smell issue.  I think some people use vinegar?

  • I have not tried vinegar or baking soda.  This could be an option.  I also have some funk rock that I might try.  I just don't if that is appropriate to try yet.
