Rash from red frosting?

We had DD's birthday party over the weekend. Her party was Strawberry shortcake and her cake had a giant red strawberry. Yesterday, she woke up with a rash over face, mostly around her mouth. It kind of looks like chapped skin, but it doesn't feel that way at all. I put some aquaphor on it.

do you think it's a possibility from the food coloring? She has her well check on Wed, so I will have them look at it then. it just looks awful.

  • Michelle would get hives-like reddness around her mouth from red, purple or orange frosting.  A dose or 2 of benadryl took care of it.

  • The same thing happened to both my DD and DS at his birthday. They both are allergic to citrus and citric acid is in buttercream icing. Could be the dye or whatever was in the icing.

I believe you - I trust that allergy moms know their ingredients - but why on earth is citric acid added to icing. I make my own buttercream frosting- butter, confectioners sugar, milk, vanilla - that's all you need!
  • I don't know why it's added. That was a store bought cake. My aunt made the last cake and promised me she's never used citric acid for her buttercream icing. The kids were fine with her cake. I was assuming OP had a store bought cake, though.
