Best Carrier for Breastfeeding?

What carrier do you recommend for breastfeeding? I have a Sleepy Wrap (It's like a moby) and for the life of me, despite watching a ton of videos about it, I can't figure out how to wrangle all the material out of the way so I can nurse in it.

I've thought about buying a ring sling or a k'tan or a baby nest or some other kind of sling for this purpose -- would those be best? -- because they look like they would be easier to nurse in but my budget is so tight right now, with all of the baby stuff we've bought in teh past few weeks, and I really want to buy a soft structured carrier in a few months (like a becco or an ergo) for when she's heavier, so I'm balking at paying ~$50 for something that might not work out.

Anyone have any suggestions? TIA!

Re: Best Carrier for Breastfeeding?

  • Are you trying to nurse upright or in a cradle position?  I am large breasted and have found that nursing ds in the sleepy wrap upright works great since the material is so stretchy...it is super discrete too.

If you haven't tried nursing upright, that is what I would recommend.  I have also found using my ring sling to nurse in a vertical position works well.  I do still have to support my breast with one hand since I am not lucky enough to be a little smaller, but it works and again is super discrete.

I have been at the hospital with my grandfather ALL week and have been able to nurse ds in the hospital room and in the halls/waiting room without people even knowing what was happening...and that is with one had in the wrap/ring sling- so you'd think that would draw a bit of attention.

  • Cradle position has been the only one that works so far. I wouldn't know how to nurse her upright -- she has no head control and she's really long for her age -- which makes football hold a bear, too.

Part of the problem I guess is that I'm very small breasted, so there's no manuevering my actual breast around. I have to get my baby's head in place in order to reach my nipple, as it doesn't move.

  • DD was really tall for her age (off the charts) and didn't have good head control in the beginning, so I was never able to make nursing in a sling/carrier work. The upright hold was nearly impossible due to her length and to do the cradle hold with my Ellaroo, I felt like I needed at least a few more inches of material. I came to the conclusion that it just wouldn't work due to DD's size.

Nonetheless, I am keeping an eye on this post as I hope someone has a helpful suggestion for you. I would love to be able to nurse in a sling if I ever have another child.

  • I have a Pikkolo and am able to nurse in it. It's a soft structured carrier and I find it very easy to use-use just adjust the straps a little. DD2 sits up facing me and nurses that way.
