Rash from Cinnamon?

I put some cinnamon in DDs pumpkin/apple mix, and her face got red and rashy around her mouth where the mixture had touched her face.  She's had cinnamon applesauce before with no issue, so I'm wondering if this is a topical rash or something.  It went away with in a few hours.  Anyone have a similar experience?

Re: Rash from Cinnamon?

  • YES!  We don't put cinnamon on anything anymore cause I feel so bad for his little face!  Forget giving him cinnamon at dinner---he rubs his eyes and it's bad news!

  • Could it be from the pumpkin?
  • DS had this when DH made him applesauce.  He made it with too much cinnamon.  It went away pretty fast too.

No, she's had both apples and pumpkin before during the 3 day wait rule.  I'm thinking I put way more cinnamon in it compared to the store bought applesauce that she got a dc.

  • Within the past week DS developed a cinnamon allergy. He had hives all throughout his body. He never had anything before, but broke out from pumpkin pancakes on Thursday and then apples with cinnamon on Saturday. I had to call the pedi for Benadryl dosing.

    Maybe she's developing an allergy?

  • It's definitely possible to have a cinnamon allergy, I had a patient once who was allergic to cinnamon.

  • Yep, DS gets a nasty contact allergy if cinnamon stays on his skin for too long. He's fine if he eats it, but if it sits on his cheeks for more than a few minutes, he breaks out into a nasty red rash. Just like your LO, it goes away within a short while, and only occurs where the cinnamon touches his skin.

Same thing happened with hummus last week (which he has had dozens of times).

  • Yeah.  The first couple times Ophelia had cinnamon the skin around her mouth got all red.  It doesn't happen if I cook with cinnamon.  She still eats it and now-a-days I don't think she gets red.

  • I've read that cinnamon is one of the more allergenic spices, and that it should be avoided if your child seems sensitive to lots of foods/you have a family history of food allergies.

  • My DD has this with cinnamon - much more if I sprinkle it on something myself than if it is something already flavored with cinnamon.  It doesn't bother her at all, though - just a red spot around her mouth that goes away within 15 min.  I read to keep offering it as it may go away once she gets more used to it (again, as long as it doesn't bother them).  And cinnamon is so healthy!
