Cloth Diapering

Moms of kiddos in CDs...

Did you have a moment of panic before you started?

I'm 4.5 weeks from my due date, I have a CD stash of all varieties of CDs (although some still need to be prepped) and there is a part of me going, "What was I thinking?!" I'm afraid I won't be able to keep up, that they're not going to work, that I'm going to hate them, etc.

But most of all, something I was once so excited about I now feel so intimidated by!!

Anyone else go through this?

  • i just switched now at 7 months and i can tell you, from my experience using disposables, cloth is so much better! it's really not that much work at all and if it's all you know, it'll be easy enough. also, there are so many different brands, you will for sure find something you love. i wish i started earlier!

  • I wasn't sure about cloth diapering and didn't prepare myself to CD and therefore I did not go through the emotions of anticipation.

When DD was born she was having a bad reaction to sposies. So DH bought newborn pre-folds, covers and cloth diaper safe lotion at a local boutique. The next day her bottom was healing up and by night looking smooth and rash free. So my emotion went from "AHHH my poor baby's bum!" to "ahhh relief and happy."

Another good thing about it is that anytime you come across doubt, a question, a leak, a concern there is a lot of support from other CD mommas and websites. Once you start you'll probably fall in love with it and all of the benefits of CDing. GL! :)

It's really easy and awesome. Just take a breath, and don't pressure yourself to start on day 1 if you don't want to.

We'll be easing into it. I have 63 (random number, I know) disposables to use before we switch to CDing full-time. I figure after the first few days I might try a CD once or twice a day to ease myself into it and get used to them!

  • Absolutely. I was so worried I'd do something wrong, or they wouldn't work, or I would have spent all that $ for nothing.

They turned out to be way easier than I ever thought they'd be, even prefolds.

    GL!

  • I'm going to be honest. I bought prefolds and covers, and I never would up using them. I got scared, I was stressed with BFing issues, and my DH refused to use cloth (still does to this day). I sold them and we used disposables until DD was  5 months. I was able to get a much better handle on everything by then and I got pockets, which I love. Now I wonder what the fuss was about-- CDing is SO easy. I definitely plan on CDing a newborn the next time around, I'll probably get BG XS since I still dont like prefolds/covers.
    :)
  • I worried we wouldn't like it - I consoled myself with the fact that if we hated it I could re-sell the diapers and switch to sposies, where if I started with sposies and hated them I couldn't make any of that money back.

Everytime someone heard I was CDing they'd say "just wait till that baby is here, you'll change you mind."  It's been 10.5 weeks now and I love my DD's fluffy butt.  We used disposibles (well gro-baby disposible inserts) 1 weekend when we were traveling and it was so much messier than CDing. After our weekend with sposies even DH swears DD's butt will never see a sposie again.  You can do it!

  • I purchased prefolds and covers prior to DD being born, but we still used disposables the first two weeks. We had some on hand that people had purchased for us at my showers (plus the ones from the hospital), so we figured we might as well use them, plus we were just trying to get settled into having a newborn at home.

And I'll be honest; the first time I put a CD on her (a Saturday), I thought, "There's no way I'm going to be able to do this." They seemed so bulky on her tiny little butt since I was used to the trim fit of the disposables. To make matters worse, the very first CD ended up leaking all over me as I held her in my lap on the couch. So I ended up going back to disposables, and I started saying things to my DH about possibly selling off our CD stash (just newborn prefolds and the covers).

But come Monday, I had renewed purpose and I decided I wasn't going to give up that easily. I tried the CDs again, and well, DD is 7 weeks old now and we've been CDing successfully. I'm so glad I did not give up on it. It's way easier than I thought and even DH is in love with CDing now. We are still using the newborn prefolds/covers, and are starting to transition to one-size pockets (using them for overnight diapers right now, but will be using them full-time once she outgrows the newborn prefolds).

You can do it. And don't get discouraged if you don't love it at first. Keep going and give it a fair shot. You'll be fine! :)
