Why is DS waking up?

OK so DS is EBF and he has nights where he goes 4-5 hours between feedings but lately (like every OTHER night) he is waking up every 2 hours.  Daytime he goes 3 hours between feedings.  I tried giving him the paci but it takes long for him to go back to sleep and I figure by that time it will be time to feed him again.  So it makes it easier on me just to feed him since I am up already.  But he doesn't eat "aggresively" and falls asleep quickly so I know he is not really hungry.  Also he is not in a full out cry when he wakes up but if I leave him it just gets louder.  Any advice?  Any idea why he is waking up so frequently?

Lurking from 3rd tri-but also second time mom who EBF DS.  This is actually totally normal and great that some nights he is going 4-5 hours! He is still young to have a set sleeping pattern.  Comfort nursing at this age isnt going to set him up with a bad habbit.  I would say try the paci-but you said that takes too long.  You could also try cluster feeding (every hour or so) in the evenings before bedtime.  But, really this is typical for a lot of babies.
