Question those with smaller dogs

We have a small chi-rat terrier, She is about the height of LO's waist.

LO's new favorite toy is the dog food and water. The food dish isn't that big of deal and we will just feed the dog twice a day instead of letting her eat when she wants. But the water is driving me NUTS. LO is ALWAYS in it making a HUGE mess.

What do you do? It's not like we can get something higher up because the dog is smaller. A gate will obviously keep them both away, we don't really have the option to install a doggy door somewhere.

Any creative ideas?

Re: Question those with smaller dogs

  • can you put the water in a room with a door and use a door stopper to only keep the door open enough for the dog to slip though, but not the baby?

  • LO is the same size at the dog, so that wont work either. :(
  • DD is constantly tipping over Dexter's bowl.  We have a west highland terrier.  I just put it up on the counter when she is in the kitchen, otherwise, she won't stop putting her hand in it!

  • We have two dog and their water bowls are in the kitchen. DD doesn't go in there and mess with it unless we are in there but here lately she has been trying to open the cabinets so she is not thinking about the water bowl. When I see her going towards the bowl I tell her "no ma'am" and then I pick her up and bring her over to where I am at in the kitchen. This seems to work because she goes over to it less and less now days.

  • I have a chihuahua rat terrier too! Ours is teeny tiny..just over 2 pounds. She was the runt. We also have a purebred long-haired chihuahua, who is huge. She's pushing 12 pounds.

We keep them in a separate room when we are gone. Their food, water, and litter box is in there. We also keep a water bowl in the kitchen. DS loves to crawl over to it and splash in it and spill it everywhere. I put it up when the dogs are in their room, but when they are out it goes back on the floor. I put a towel under it.

Not quite sure what I will do when DS starts walking and can get to it faster! Right now I know when he's going for it because he makes excited noises as he crawls over to it.

  • We have 3 chihuahuas and we keep their food/water in the entry way with a gate.  The dogs don't need access to it all the time, so I'll keep it closed whenever Kaitlyn's in that area.  Sometimes I lock the dogs in with the food when she's zeroed in on bugging them.
