Anyone else have a late walker...

DS is 14.5 months and still not walking yet. I mean, he cruises all the furniture/tables/etc and pushes his little cart thing all over the house but he really hasn't walked on his own. Recently he started standing unassisted for 10-30 seconds at a time and he has taken 3 or 4 "steps" towards me but that's really it.

My mom and MIL keep saying that DH and myself were really late walkers but it gets old when everyone always asks "so is he walking yet?" The rest of his motor skills seem fine and for what it's worth, he really didn't start crawling until 11 months - so I guess he'll start walking when he's good and ready.

  • It's too soon for me to tell if Jonah is a late walker (he's only 10.5 months), but I just wanted to tell you to try not to worry too much. I already get the questions about whether or not Jonah is walking, and I start to get concerned that he's already behind. Take a deep breath and try to relax. You're doing a great job with CJ!

  • DS was just about 15 mos. on the nose when he walked unassisted.  It is I guess considered late, but anything after 16 mos. is when to really worry.  I'd day he is just fine especially b/c he is moving all around everything else.

  • I think it's perfectly normal. DD didn't walk without assistance until around 15 months. I vowed not to stress out about it as much with DS because I knew how much more they get into once they start walking. Of course DS had to start walking at 9 months. Stick out tongue
  • My co-worker's DD was a very late walker, past 15 mo.  They took her to get evaluated and the PT gave her a jump rope to hold, and off she went.  She apparently just needed something to hold to walk, lol.  If he's letting go and taking a few steps, it wasn't too long after that that DD really took off.
  • Piper didn't walk until she was 18 months old.  That's still within the (end) range of normal, but I'm not gonna lie - it wasn't always fun to see kids 10 months younger than her running around while she crawled.  We even took her for a PT evaluation (per pedi's recommendation) at 16 months because she couldn't even stand unassisted.

Turns out she was fine, didn't need PT, and a big part of it was just her uber-cautious personality. She's now 3 1/2 and runs, jumps, etc. with the best of them.

Kady walked at 14 months and that felt early to me, even though I know plenty of kiddos who walked at 10 months.

Don't stress! I know it's hard not to though :-)

  • what kind of shoes is he wearing (if any)?  This may be a total coincidence, but at K's 1 year appointment, she wasn't walking but had been cruising since 9 months so the pedi (who is admittedly pretty old school with a lot of his advice) recommended getting her some shoes that were higher around the ankle (she'd been wearing robeez type shoes), so we got a pair at stride rite and within a week, she was walking.

  • A lot of the time kids who walk younger are kids with siblings so they just want to keep up.  DD started walking around 13 months.  My cousin's daughter who has two older siblings was walking by like 10 months.  I wouldn't worry, kids just go at their own pace.

  • DS did not walk until about 17 months, but he had motor delays and was in PT

  • I know exactly how you feel! DD didn't walk until she was 15.5 months old. She was a late crawler too. Our dr was never concerned and she hit all of her other milestones on time. I remember getting so frustrated and upset when people would ask if she was walking yet. I remember reading posts on here about other kids her age walking and it was hard not to ge upset. One day it just clicked with her and off she went! DS on the other hand walked at 11 months but as a pp mentioned, they say that the second child walks earlier. Same thing happened with teeth...DD didn't get her 1st tooth until she was 11 months an DS got his first at 5 months! Every child is different. Hang in there!

  • Tyler shows no real interest in walking.  He can cruise between the furniture and he loves to push his music table all over the place, but he won't walk a step.  He doesn't even really do it when we hold his hands.  (So much for the second child doing it sooner!)

I think CJ will just take off one of these days.  I think when they're cruising like that, they have demonstrated the ability to walk and just have to gain the confidence to let go and start walking on their own power.  Justin took his first steps a week after his first birthday, but didn't walk another step till 6 weeks later!

Oh, and Tyler didn't crawl till 11 months either.  I'm actually happy to hear you say this, makes me feel better about him too   :)

  • Brady just started walking about two weeks ago.  I was worrying because I thought it was late, and my husband and I walked early, but then one day he took about ten steps out of nowhere, and progressed to walking more than he crawls very quickly.  I think the "normal" range is up to 18 months, or at least that's what our pedi said.  He'll get there, but I know the constant questions get annoying!
