Potty Training

How long to continue treats?

We have been potty training for about a month and all is going well.  She tells me when she has to pee and even poo :)  Some times she still asks for treats and I still give them to her.

How long to I keep doing this?

Re: How long to continue treats?

  • We chose not to offer food treats during potty training and instead we did the whole funny potty dance and hugs and I'm-so-proud-of-yous. This worked VERY well and she was PTd by day 4. However, she didn't decide she was going to poop on the potty for 2mos post PTing and I did find myself trying to bribe her with a cookie twice.....but it didn't work.....her fear and/or uncomfortableness with doing it there was just too great at the time.

When she was ready to poop, she just did it one day and when I knew she was about to go I got so excited and didn't want to scare her away or have her change her mind so I was silly and said I'd give her a cookie if she pooped. So now we give cookies (3 of those small mini oreos or mini chips ahoys you can buy in a snack pack so nothing huge at all) when she poops. I have noticed though that she forgets sometimes to ask for them. I still remind her to come get her (well-earned) cookies because I really am just so proud of her and I want to reward her in that way now. The girl RARELY has sweets of any kind so it's a big deal in our house.

Anyhoo, the cookie for pooping thing has been going on about a month now and she's already starting to forget them but still poops so I figure we can phase out if we really want to.

  • Well, we're at a point when if he's having a good few days, I only give him his treat (basically a jelly bean) if he asks. We reinforce he gets them for telling us in advance (it was orginally just for going, so we've been working on phasing them out in that sense). I have so many stickers, I'd be happy to keep giving theose if he wanted them instead - which he does sometimes.

Basically, I'd love to cut them out, worry that he's had them too long, but until he's consistently going without accidents (we've been hovering about 90% fora  few weeks), I dont' want to cut them out quite yet.
