New York Babies

Delivering at NYU

I'm delivering at NYU in late January. Does anyone have any tips/info on the hospital? I am keen to have a private room if possible but don't think they book in advance.

Re: Delivering at NYU

  • Hi,

I delivered my first son at NYU and will have this one on Dec. 1 as well.  I also work there so I'm probably alittle bit biased but the experience was very good.  With the private rooms, once you have the baby, your husband or whomever is with you needs to go to the nurse's station and request one.  If it's available, than it's yours but if not, they may come to you the next day or two if something opens up and ask if you want to switch, that is what happened to us but sharing the room wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.  Someone recently told me that their policy has changed and that if you're in a non private room, as long as both parties agree, the significant other is allowed to spend the night.  I recently checked and the cost of the private room is $525/night.  Best of luck!!

  • They definitely don't book in advance. I am due in April and have already been sent their info package with a lot of the information I wanted - have you gotten that? If not, give them a call. It includes paperwork that they want to have on hand before you arrive to deliver so that you are "pre-registered."

  • I delivered there early August. I was induced and then had to have a c-section. I stayed in a shared room. You can not book in advance. They are on a first come first serve basis. I believe they are 500$ a night. I can't remember exactly.
The rooms are TINY. I hated hate hated sharing a room. I didn't want to spend the extra money on a private room. I had an unplanned c-section and was there 4 days. It was seriously irritating walking around all that furniture w/ an IV pole next to me. Every time my roomates baby cried mine did and vise versa.
They strongly encourage breastfeeding. I breastfed and they were very helpful. All of the nurses are female and they are required to be lactation consultants. The in hospital breastfeeding class was great. The one I paid to go to through the hospital was pointless. The childbirth class was pretty good but costs 250$. I learned more valuable info about breastfeeding in that class than the breastfeeding class (the pre labor one).
Most of the nurses were really nice & very attentive. I disliked 2 of the 10 or so nurses I had. They also discourage you from keeping your baby in the nursery for bonding purposes. Of course if you want to they will take your baby to the nursery though. One of the two roommates I had did this. They have been awarded to be a "baby friendly" hospital through UNICEF for these practices.
There aren't showers in the  postpartum room, just a bathroom. The showers are out in the hall. The food is included but its typical yucky hospital food.
You can have your husband in until 10pm and other guests until 8pm. I didn't see anyone trying to break this rule. There is nowhere for your husband to sleep. You just have your small bed and a chair that barely fits in the room.
Thats everything I can think of about NYU. You can PM me if  you have any other questions.

  • This is so very helpful, I can not thank you enough for taking the time for the advice and giving me a sense of what the experience will be like. I can't imagine not having my husband stay the night.
