Cloth Diapering

Leaking...Help!

I have been cloth diapering for about 6 weeks now and really felt like I had the hanf of it.  Then this this past week LO has had more leaks than I can count.  We are using a combination of Smartipants, Fuzzibunz, and Bum Genius all OS.  I snap them correctly and check to make sure they are snug around the legs.  I can't help but think I may be doing something wrong since I have begun to have leaks with all 3 brands.  I have been using the Free & Clear Seventh Generation detergent, cold rinse first followed by a hot wash and another cold rinse.

Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Are the diapers saturated when you change?  If they are, you either need to change more frequently or add more absorbency.  If they aren't saturated, you might have a repelling issue.  The remedy for that is stripping your diapers (one method is to use HOT water and blue Dawn).

  • Easy to check for repelling.  Hold a dry one in your hand and pour a few tsps of water on it and see if the water absorbs or rolls off.  Ditto about Dawn blue (the original).

I haven't had good luck using this method. None of my diapers repel but if I try pouring water on them they won't absorb. When babies pee it's warm and there's some force behind it. I would look at the inserts. If they're soaked then you need more absorption. If they aren't saturated then you probably have a repelling issue.

  • Thank you all so much for the feedback :)
