GD moms with fibroids... please come in?

I'm planning a natural birth in a hospital with the help of a doula.  I'm concerned that with the gestational diabetes and a small fibroid, it may lead to an unwanted intervention like a c-section.  Does anyone else have this particular combination of health comlications?

I'm 36 wks and have gained 26lbs and continue to do stay active, i.e. yoga, walking; I'm not GD because of obsesity and I am not on insulin.  for the most part, I've been able to control my glucose levels with diet, but it was high this week after having cake without icing at my baby shower and part of a slice of cheesecake at a family dinner, which obviously, I shouldn't have had, but it was just a few bites.  I'm anxious that LO will be put on insulin or medication after birth.

Any advice or experiences with these problems?

Re: GD moms with fibroids... please come in?

  • I have insulin-dependent GD and two small fibroids, and my OB never mentioned that the fibroids would have any implications for my labor and delivery. I should probably ask her at my new appointment.

At this point, they are planning to induce me at 39 weeks. I don't think they would plan a C-section unless LO gets too big.

  • GD won't lead to a c-section, unless it is unmanaged, and as a result the child it too large to be born vaginally.  The only thing to do in that case it to make sure you are carefully monitoring your sugar levels.

A small fibroid is extremely common.  Many many pregnant women have them and they don't interfere with delivery unless they are located in such a way that the could be blocking things, or have grown so large as to risk harming the uterus.

If your child needs insulin or medication after birth, what is the problem with that?  It is a result of the GD - that your child is used to dealing with your system, and when removed from the Mom support, may need a little medication help to get their blood sugars under control.  I honestly wouldn't worry about it.  It is a very short term problem and very minor.
