if carseats are unsafe in grocery carts, what to do?

In the pp about Chicco vs. Graco carseats, there's discussion about how it's unsafe to put a carseat in a grocery cart. So what is the safer alternative?

For a baby who can sit up, there's the grocery cart covers, but what about little ones who can't sit up? Suggestions?

Thanks!

  • Vons delivers! Then I'll just do small grocery trips and fit everything in the basket of my snap n go. Or wait till DH can go with me.

ETA: Or I will wear LO.

  • I wear LO.  Way easier than dragging a giant car seat into the store.

  • I never take DD grocery shopping, but if I had to, I would put her carrier inside the actual cart. The groceries would just have to go around her.

  • I have the Graco and it fits snug in the cart.  It even snaps in.  I also keep one hand on it when I am moving.

I did this on my very first trip to the grocery store.  We barely had any room for food in the cart.  I felt like I should have just brought the stoller and used the basket in that.

We later put our carseat on the grocery cart.  You learn which stores' carts the seat will "snap" onto and which they won't.  Some we have to put the seat sideways.  However, we ALWAYS are very careful with the cart.

  • I put DS in the actual cart (in his car seat) and put things around him. Then I get a kind person to push the cart to my car while I carry DS in his carseat (to put the groceries in the car); I take DH with me if its lots of stuff or leave DS with DH at home and go alone: OR I wear DS.

Same here. It's not like I ever walked away and just left her there.

  • We skipped the infant car seat completely. I couldn't even imagine trying to shop with the seat inside the cart, and it's waaaay too unsafe looking to put it on top of the cart (and those carts are unwieldy anyway). And I wanted to wear her anyway.

We wear DD whenever we go on our big trip. DH and I usually do the big weekly trip together. For quick trips in, I either wear her or carry her. Earlier, I went to Target and used the stroller so I could carry a hand basket, since DH took the Ergo with him to work, but the other day I just carried her since I was only getting 5 things.

  • A moby wrap?

  • If you are shopping alone and you plan to take your car seat with you in the store the I think the best thing is to place it inside of the cart and then place items around the seat and under the cart. I plan to put LO in a sling or front carrier while I shop when she is little.

  • I usually would wear DD or I would put her car seat in the large part of the cart where the food would go.  Honestly, I never even went to the store alone the first few months for a major shopping trip.  DH did everything on the weekends.  Or we would all go together and I would wear her or snap her infant seat into the stroller.
  • I did not take him food shopping before he could sit up in the shopping cart.  If I absolutely had to, I put him in the stroller and only got a small amt of groceries.

  • Just because it snaps it doesn't make it safe. It is still top heavy regardless if it snaps or not.  Same with putting it sideways.

  • If I take the carseat in I put in the cart but most of the time I would wear DD until she got strong enough to sit up on her own.

  • when DS was little i either wore him or if he was still sleeping in the seat, i just put it in the big part of the cart.

It is not safe to have the seat on the front part of the seat, regardless if it seems like it "snaps in" or not.

  • When our DD was too little I popped her in the ergo or put her in the actual cart.  When we do our monthly grocery spree at costco I wear her because I need the top part for bread and eggs.

I like wearing her because she seems way more calm and isn't trying to eat the icky shopping cart bar.

  • i usually brought the snap n go...u can fit sooo much stuff in that basket
  • Carry your baby, or wear her.
