Around here, people seem to have different opinions on what constitutes an "umbrella stroller." I, personally, think of something that's very, very small and ultra lightweight. I often see people recommending larger Maclarens or the BJCM as an umbrella stroller, which personally, I just don't get. The BJCM is small and lightweight, but it still has a pretty large footprint. And having flown with it several times, it can be a little big in tight spaces...I cursed it while riding the train between terminals at ATL.
I love my City Mini, but I wanted something really small for shopping and travel. There are some stores that we frequent that the BJCM is simply too big to use (like our local Carter's outlet -- I'll never understand why the racks are SO close together!), so we got a Maclaren Volo. It stays in my trunk and I use it frequently.
But that's something that you should hold off on until you know exactly what YOUR needs are. They're not ideal for small infants anyway, so you've got quite a bit of time to figure it out. :P I probably didn't need the Volo, but I got it anyway.
