NBR: How much did you spend on your table ?

FI and I have fallen in love with a bar style 6 seater counter high table set.  We just sold our kitchen table today and we need to buy something asap. We want to buy something that will last a while, bc we have been buying cheepo $300 tables and furniture that keeps breaking.

This set is $1300(CAD) after tax and including a 5 year warrenty.

My question is ....what did u spend on your table set? Is it worth spending this much on a quality piece of furniture?

**Dont forget where most of you are (USA) that price would be like $999 LOL stupid Canadian markups

  • We have the cheap $300 set, in fact, we've had it for 6 years now.  DH hates it, I don't particularly love it either.  We have picked a 6 seat high-top like you want, and I think it was between $800 and $1000?  So that sounds reasonable to me.

  • I was so tired of the el cheapo tables, but there was no way we could have spent $800+ on a good set.  Instead, we made our dining room table, and I love it.  It cost less than $100 for all the materials, and took about 3 weeks from pile-o-wood to finished table in the dining room, and would have been less time if I hadn't procrastinated finishing it for so long.  I've been told it looks a lot like a table from Pottery Barn, but I don't know, I haven't looked at their line to see for myself.

And it was the first wood working project that either of us have done in years, and our first project together without help.  The last time DH built something was in jr. high, and the last time I did was to help my dad build a desk about 6 years ago.  It was so much easier than I thought it would be.

  • I think the table was $600. It's huge. Each chair was around $100 so your pricing doesn't seem too far off for something nice.

  • We spent $1200 on a set very similair to the one you are describing!

  • We have a beautiful (expensive) solid wood rustic style dining room table with cheap-o leather parson chairs. The cat attacked the chairs and they are shot. We are saving up to buy nice, expensive upholstered chairs. I wish we invested in better chairs because they would've lasted longer than the cheap ones. We love our table though and think it was a great investment.
  • Ours was almost $3000 total (including eight chairs, two of them with arms and felt bottoms on the chairs and table, one leaf). Our table was custom made by a local Amish company. It's also hard maple so it is supposed to hold up better. We wanted something nice that would hold up through kids.

  • Thanks ladies, its good to know were not going to be spending too much. I want quality without paying a zillion dollars that we dont have :)
  • We have the Ashley Furniture Carlyle bar height table we paid $600.00.  MIL always told us to spend the extra money on good quality solid wood furniture so we didn't have to replace it 5 years later!
  • We bought ours from Pottery Barn for $499.  We were lucky enough to have chairs from our former el-cheapo set that matched the table so we ended up just using those and they match perfectly.

We need to buy a dining room table for our formal dining room and are thinking of a $1000 or so budget.  We haven't bought any furniture in about 3 years, so we feel it's justified.

  • We got ours at IKEA for $300.00, and the chairs were $30.00 each (we got four chairs.) So our set was pretty cheap, but we absolutely LOVE it. I personally wouldn't spend $1300 on a table set.. but then again.. DH and I are on a pretty tight budget at the moment.
  • Kitchen table with 4 chairs was $900

Dining room set - that includes the table, 6 chairs and the china cabinet - $4000

BUT i figure it will be out last set for both, so a good investment. We should have them forever.
