any hemophilia carriers?

Just curious what you have been told if you are.  I recently found out that I am a carrier and since I am having a boy he will have a 50% chance of being a hemophiliac.  I haven't been able to really discuss anything with my dr yet so I thought I would take a shot in the dark and see if anyone knows anything about it on here. TIA!

Re: any hemophilia carriers?

  • I'm not that I know of, but I believe that hemophilia is a recessive gene carried on the x chromosome similar to baldness and color-blindness.  That's why its mostly men that have these genes actually express in them.  A lot of people don't realize that a boy cannot inherit male pattern baldness from his father.  He inherits it from his mother because his father gives the baby a y chromosome.

Since you don't have hemophilia, that means you only have one recessive x-chromosome to give him hence the 50% shot he will have it.  You have Xx and you will either pass on the X (non-hemophilia) or x (hemophilia) gene. If you had hemophilia, your son would have 100% chance of getting it because you would be xx (both recessive hemophilia genes) and your son would get one for sure.  Since he gets a Y from DH, he can't get a dominant non-hemophilia gene from him.

That's about all I know about it other than it can be a tough affliction to deal with.  You have to be really careful they don't get hurt because a minor cut for him could mean a blood transfusion. Hopefully, your LO won't get the gene.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Yeah what I know about it is that my cousin has type A mod-severe.  Over the years he has had to be super careful.  He had to quit playing college basketball and at one point he was 17th in the nation for windsurfing but was getting bumped too badly and ended up with a blood transfusion in which he contracted Hep B!

The scary part is that years ago the whole family was tested and the blood center here said I was NOT a carrier yet now they are saying that I am.  So I will get retested (as if they don't poke you enough lol) to be sure.  Scary though that we just assumed I was not when my first son was born!
