Thanks for the links. I realized moments after I posted it that it was a dumb question. I'm sure it's annoying being asked "What do I need". I'll make sure to visit both of the pages you sent.
Do you have a friend/sister/sister-in-law who is already a mom who can go with you to BRU (or wherever you're registering)? I found it immensely helpful to go with someone who already went through the newborn/baby stage and could tell me what was really necessary and what wasn't.

This. It would have been paralyzingly overwhelming if I had gone by myself.
A few non-obvious items:
- cloth diapers (Gerber makes them) to use as burp cloths
- Aden & Anais blankets for swaddling
- the Fisher Price Rock N Play sleeper
- an Ergo-type carrier, NOT the Baby Bjorn. We got a Pikkolo.
Don't bother registering for any clothes, blankets, or bibs if you are having a shower - you will get a million of them from everyone you know.
Re: What do you REALLY need?!
This is a decent list of new baby basics from ConsumerReports.com: Link.
There was also a discussion on 0-3 a few days ago about what moms consider "immediate needs" for baby with a lot of suggestions: Link.
Here's another list you can look at:
