High-Risk Pregnancy

GD and NST?

For those with GD (especially insulin controlled), are you having/will you have regular NSTs?  When did you start them? How frequent were they?

My OB said mine will start at 32 weeks, but they will be every other week. It seems like some GD ladies have them twice a week. I'm on insulin and having twins, so I thought I might need them more frequently?

Thoughts?

Re: GD and NST?

  • Mine starts weekly NST's at 34 weeks.  I had my first one last week.  Not sure if they will increase to twice weekly or not.

  • My GD is insulin controlled (overnight).  I had my first NST at 32 weeks (which is when my doc's office starts them...it just happened to be the same week I was put on insulin), and once a week until 34 weeks at which point I change to twice a week, one of them with an amniotic fluid check.  And then a growth ultrasound at 36 weeks.

  • I am also pregnant with twins and GD. I will go twice a week starting at 32 weeks.

  • I am diet controlled, so they didn't start my NSTs until 37 weeks, and I get one a week.

  • My perinatologist will start them at 32 weeks and I'll go in weekly for them. With my son, I didn't start hem until 34 weeks.
  • I only had one at the very end of my pregnancy because I was feeling decreased movement. It's probably different for everyone, depending on their unique situation.
  • Started NSTs @ 32 weeks twice a week.  This was the plan from the time I was diagnosed, however, I failed the 1 hour so bad they didn't bother having me do the 3 hour....maybe that had something to do with it?  Since, I have been put on insulin at lunch, dinner and bedtime.
  • I'll start them at 36 weeks and they'll be 2 times a week.  I'm on insulin before bed right now.  It sounds like they're starting you a little earlier because of the twins.  Twins, as I'm sure you know, are more likely to come early to start with, so it makes sense to me.  I'm sure they'll up them to weekly and maybe even 2x a week eventually.  I've noticed my OBs seem to want to play things by ear.  At first I felt like I just wasn't in on "the plan" but now I know there is no set plan.  They're not willing to talk about an induction date, or deciding if a c-section is needed, until after I start my NSTs and another growth scan.  Maybe yours are similar and that's why what you've heard for the immediate future may not make sense compared to what everyone else has planned towards the end of their pregnancy.

  • I am diet controlled, but now they are talking glyburide (not sure why my numbers are good), but I started weekly tests and ultrasounds at 32 weeks.
