What are Waldorf Dolls?

I've decided to try to add a Montessori-esque environment to our home as the LO has become mobile.  In my research about Montessori at home, I found reference to Waldorf, and in particular Waldorf dolls. 

What makes a doll a Waldorf doll?  And why are the Waldorf dolls on Etsy and Amazon so expensive?

I'm not at all Waldorf... but am in love with the dolls. Basically, they're made of natural materials ( cotton, wool) and their faces are a neutral expression, which is supposed to enable the child to imagine how the doll feels, as opposed to a doll having on a plastered on smile, so it always has to be happy.

waldorf and montessori are not the same thing.

but the dolls are great. 

pick up "creative play for your baby" (there's a toddler one, too) and there's a TON of waldorf diy "toys" in there - including the doll, i think.

I bought a waldorf doll kit and made DD a doll, she doesn`t look have bad either.  Worked out to be less than half the price of buying one made

 

As for the reason I am sure they are so expensive is the time involved.  It took my 3 hours to get the dolls head stuffed correctly and a week to figure out how to crochet a cap for the base of her hair and then to put all her hair on.  I would say I worked at least 24 hours on actually making the doll.   At $5 an hour that works out to be $120.

Wow I never realized how much go into them! I'm in love with modern waldorf dolls with funky hair and fashionable clothes. The old school ones look kind of creepy to me. I'm actually starting to collect dolls for DD already since they seem so hard to get. I'd love to make one but I can't even sew!
