13 month old turning right foot out when walking

My daughter has been walking since 11 months and really well since 12 months.  She is almost 14 months and I just noticed in the past week that she has been turning her right foot out when she walks.  There is no limp, or pain, or anything her right foot is just turned more out...anyone have any idea?

Re: 13 month old turning right foot out when walking

  • I was just telling my mom today that I noticed DD doing this. She isn't walking yet but she has a few push walkers around the house and I noticed her doing that a lot, with the right foot also. She does it when I stand behind her and let her walk holding onto my fingers too. I was thinking of bringing it up at her 15 month appt but I know the pedi always pulls her legs down at her feet and straightens her legs together, so I figure he would have noticed if something was off before.

  • Google "out-toeing." Finn had this pretty severely at 13 months. His was due to a tibial torsion, which means his shin bone was twisted so that his foot naturally pointed outward. It happens because of the way they're positioned in the womb. We saw an orthopedic surgeon about it, he told us that it typically corrects itself and there is nothing they can do about it. I was really worried, but it's completely gone away on it's own.

This might not be your daughter's issue at all, just what our experience was.

Yeah that is what I found.  My dad is a neauroradiologist and he said the same thing, but he told me to take her to her pedi and see if he suggested the orthopedist.  She barely ever is in shoes but I just noticed it today the most when she was in her sandals.  You can notice it in barefeet but it is not as noticeable as in shoes.

  • My DD doesn't walk unasssisted yet, but my pedi mentioned at her 1 year appt that when she does start, it is normal for one or both feet to turn in or out until about 18 months of age. If it doesn't straighten out over the next few months, then I'd consult your pedi.

  • DD turns her foot out too. The pedi then asked me to walk and said I turn my foot out too! He said they used to put corrective shoes but now it usually corrects itself with time. He also said to only check them when they are barefoot. The shoe can cause them to do this.
