Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

s/o flu shots

DD had a flu shot at her 6 month appointment back in March (2nd dose April) because flu season wasn't quite over where we lived. I asked our new office about whether or not she needed another one, since it's a new flu season... they looked at me like I had ten heads and said no. Does this seem right? How long does a flu shot last? I want to be extra cautious because DD is starting DC next week, and because I'll be having a baby in the next month+

Re: s/o flu shots

  • I believe a flu shot lasts 1 year??  So she will be due again next March.

  • Seems to me that she'd need another one...and probably 2 since she only got one last year.  But I don't know for sure.

  • No, no, no to the pp.  She needs a new flu shot because it's a new flu season, and the flu shot is reformulated every year.  While your LO might have some protection remaining (i.e., if she gets the flu, it may be less severe), it will not be effective against this year's prevalent strains that were not included in last year's vaccine.

    from the CDC:

Even people that got vaccinated with the 2009 H1N1 vaccine or last year?s seasonal vaccine need to be vaccinated with the flu seasonal vaccine this year. This season?s vaccine provides protection against other influenza strains that were not in either the seasonal or the 2009 H1N1 vaccine last season and besides, immunity from a vaccine gotten last year may decline over time.

Right...but wouldn't she need 2 of the newly formulated ones since she never got the 2 initial ones - only the one.  At the pedi's office yesterday they told me if we had only gotten 1 flu shot last year and not the 2nd one 30 days after she'd still have to have 2 this year to be fully protected.

Thanks... and sorry, I did leave out that in March/April she had both the seasonal flu and h1n1 shots

This is true.  She will need two of the new seasonal flu shot, spaced at least 28 days apart.
