I see it mentioned a lot as a favorite activity around here. Is it similar to a pick-your-own fruit type farm? Or is it more of a harvest festival kind of thing? Is this just the dumbest question of the day?
You go to an orchard and pick your own apples. Its a fun relaxing thing to do, take family or kids with you, nice autum weather, pick apples and take them home and make lots of apple pie
We like going because you get to pick from all sorts of different types of apples. (And it doesn't hurt that my favorite orchard also has a winery on location!!!)
You actually pick them off a tree in a huge orchard. The one we go to has a huge farmer's market too and sells fresh cider and tons of fresh pies and jams/jellies. It's a nice way to spend the day and we're going on Saturday. Can't wait!
if i hadn't grown up out east, i won't have gotten it either but it's when you go to the orchard and pick your own apples. sometimes it also involves hayrides, mazes and FRESH apple cider (yummy !)
it makes me sad seeing all my old hs fb friends post about taking their kids apple picking .. fat chance of that happening in CA .. now grape stomping .. that's where things even out
Love - a wildly misunderstood although highly desirable malfunction of the heart which weakens the brain, causes the eyes to sparkle, cheeks to glow, blood pressure to rise and the lips to pucker - Author Unknown
They have cider and doughnuts, too. I haven't been since I was a little girl. The weather here is still too hot to go - though I might try and go next weekend!
We have a bunch of orchards around here and we just went last week to pick raspberries. Tomorrow we're going to a corn maze (if it isn't raining). I looooove doing those kinds of things in the Fall. It's one of my favorite things about New England.
Fresh cider, cider doughnuts, jams, jellies, fresh baked pies, fruit that has just been picked, pick-your-own pumpkins, hayrides, corn mazes. . . If you ever get the chance to travel somewhere that has seasons you have to do all the typical Fall things!
So, exactly what it sounds like. I think Im a little jealous of people with a Fall. And orchards.
Yeah real fall is pretty dang awesome. I never had it before moving here.
My mom's group went apple picking yesterday but sadly it rained. We still went but I would have liked to have taken pictures and not been soaked. But OMG, the apples are so freaking good!

I know, right? There is something to cutting out the middle man and going right to the source.
I brought some of the apples we picked into DS's daycare on Monday. The teachers said the kids loved them and said if we had more to get rid of, to bring more.
We used to live in Kentucky. I've had them. And while I'll admit that Fall and Spring were quite pretty, Winter is one I'd like to never see again.
Winter is so worth it, though, when Spring comes. And I do love myself a fresh snowfall. I would be miserable right now to have "summer" still ahead of me. I am LOVING the cooler weather right now... there's nothing better than a sunny, cool day with red and yellow leaves on the ground and the smell of burning leaves in the air. I suppose that's why we each live where we do!
Thank you. Ya'll just made me really appreciate seasons. Now I think I am looking forward to fall and cool weather.
I actually like winter (and snow) up to and including New Year's. Then all I do is wait for spring. My birthday is in Feb and I can even do without that! LOL (well, maybe thats because Im getting older)

Re: Can people with seasons explain Apple Picking to me?
You just go to a local apple orchard and pick your own apples. They usually have fall events there too like pumpkin patches, hayrides, etc.
Sorry, franny, you are definitely missing out.
Come visit next fall.
It does sound nice...it's so hot here I had to have my pumpkin latte iced yesterday.

Um, BOH, I believe you forgot to do something. (read PM from last week)
It's all fun until some parent isn't watching their preteen boys who have started an apple war and you get hit in the ear with a Fuji.
But there's fresh apple cider and carmels apples to take the sting away.
