Baby Names

Is this name hard for you to read/pronounce?

We are naming our son after my FIL (well, flip flopping the first and middle names).  We do not like FIL's first name, George (translated Georgios in Greek)...his middle name is Konstantino (translated Constantine in English)

Do you have a hard time reading/pronouncing Konstantino?  DH seems to think since we live in America (not Greece) people will have a hard time with it.  I am not about to call him/name him Constantine just because we live here, I want to stay close to our roots/culture.  I do not think it is hard...sound out every syllable...it's pretty easy.  I was at the Apple store recently and the employee called someone by the name Konstantino up to the Genius Bar  and although she did say it with an "american accent" (who cares!) she did pronounce it! I even asked her...did you have a hard time reading/saying that? and she said no.

So our son's name would be Konstantino Georgios

Thoughts opinions welcome :) TIA!

Re: Is this name hard for you to read/pronounce?

  • I wouldn't have a problem.
  • No, it's not hard to pronounce, but people mispronounce common American names so I'm sure his name will be mispronounced.

  • I like it, and I have no problem pronouncing it. I think it's great that you want to stick to your roots, and that you're using a family name. Congrats.
  • I agree with you. It's not a difficult name to pronounce at all.

FWIW, I do like Constantine, but I don't think it's any easier to pronounce than Konstantino.

  • I have no problems pronouncing it and much prefer it over Constantine. If I were you I'd stick w/ your Geek roots.

  • The K seems a little awkward, but only because I'm so much more used to see Constantine. I certainly don't think anyone would have trouble pronouncing it--it sounds just like it looks (at least with an American accent, it does: ).
  • Nope, no problem pronouncing it.

  • I think it is a very nice name.  I don't think it is difficult to pronounce at all.
  • (sorry if there are 2 posts... computer problems.)

Anyway, I don't think it's hard. And I also think it's a good name, like the "stickin with the roots" stuff... I will add that I LOVE the name george (georgios or however is it in greek) so I'd use that as a first name. Also, in all honesty, I did have to look at it a second to understand the name, but I think it's the K and it being so long.. just sorta threw me off. My name is renee (short and fairly normal) and people can't get that right... so will he have problems? YES. Is it a good name? YES!

  • Not at all, and I love both spellings, even with my disdain for the poor, didn't-do-anything-wrong letter K. Smile

Konstantino...if I met one, I'd want to know all about his name, so make sure to tell him his name story just in case we cross paths. Wink

  • I will add, I am not a fan of common names, this is why we did not pick George (or Georgios) and when I hear George I think of the Jetson's (cartoon!) LOL

  • No. It looks pretty phonetic to me, no silent consonants or too many vowels in a row or any of the other things that might trip up someone's pronunciation.

  • I don't think it's hard to pronounce, but to me it's a bit of a mouthful, have you tried yelling it as if you are calling him to dinner? I hope you have a nickname so you can say it quickly and other kids at daycare can talk to him.

I agree. Pronunciation shouldn't be too much of a problem, but I'd put some thought into a nickname. You'll shout yourself hoarse yelling "Go, Konstantino!" at every Little League game!

  • I had no problems pronouncing it.

LOL, george jetson is awesome! jk... I think of curious george and I LOVE it.  Regardless, you have a good name picked for your LO

  • Not hard to pronounce at all!

I have a friend who also named their son after the grandpa, Konstantino, and they call him by the nn Dino (pronounced Deeno).  I think its pretty cute!

  • very easy to read...keep it!

  • No, I would not have a hard time pronouncing it, but think some people will mispronounce it because some people are idiots. I have a close friend whose last name is Blosser - she got so many variations on that and I consider that to be one of the easiest names to pronounce.

  • I am not a fan of nick names either...my name has 4 syllables, DD's name is Natalia (pronounced Nah-ta-lee-a accent on the "lee") also 4 syllables. I am a firm believer in not butchering beautiful names w/nick names. Dino, Kosta and oddly enough Gus are nick names for Konstantino. Dino is my sister's dogs name. That would be wierd to call our son Dino too! LOL I appreciate all of your advice and feedback and thank you for loving our LO's name!
