TTC After a Loss

Will you get the flu vaccine? H1N1?

I have never gotten the flu shot for various reasons.  When I was pg before I also opted against getting it.  However, my SIL (a pediatrician who gets mad at me every year for not getting it) told me to make sure I get it this year since we're TTC.

I'm just not sure, especially since I have seen recent reports that the H1N1 vaccine has been linked to miscarriage.

SIL has a thimerisol free shot which she offered to give me.  If I do it, I'm thinking of doing it this weekend, before I O.  I don't know...just wondering what your thoughts are for yourselves.

ETA: H1N1 is included in the regular flu shot this year - this makes me much more likely to say no.

  • I won't be getting either flu vaccine this year. I got both last year and lost my twins shortly after I got the h1n1 shot.

  • I'm not getting one.

My SIL's best friend had a miscarriage the day after she got one. I'm not saying the shot caused it, but I'm not sure it didn't either.

  • Before TTC, I routinely got the "regular" flu shot but I avoided the H1N1 shot.  Even as a former health care provider who understands the very real public health concerns related to flu, I felt weird about how that vaccine was produced and pushed out.  Probably an irrational concern.

Now that the H1N1 is mixed in the "regular" flu shot this year, and now that we are TTC, I am thinking about skipping it.

  • I will be getting it. I've been spleen free since 2000. As a result, I am very likely to die from the flu. So if there is a vaccine to prevent against something, I have to get it. Also, I have to be on IV antibiotics if I ever get a fever as I could end up septic very easily. I was however, told to wait until after we have a baby to get the tetanus/whopping cough vaccine as you have to wait 3 months after getting it to conceive.
  • Nope. I don't think it's worth the risk. I have only had the flu once in the past 10 years or so. I'm not around kids, I don't work in an office, I don't think I'm going to get it and I don't trust the vaccines, especially the newer H1N1 vaccines.

  • I got both shots last year.  I work with premies and sick newborns who all have very weak immune systems, so I got both shots last year.  My DD is also only 2.  Since I work in a hospital and could possibly be exposed, and acutally was twice, I wanted to get them.  I get a regular flu shot every year, including the year I was pg with DD.  They make a preservative free one for pg women.  I didn't have any side effects from them.  H1N1 scares me since pregnant women are one of the number one at risk groups of dying from it.  Unfortunately I saw first hand how quickly a pregnant woman can become sick once she contracts this flu. It's super scary.  I just don't want to mess around with that.

  • Probably not.

I never get the regular flu shot, even though I work with teenagers. I have had one minor cold in the past 4 years. I've never had the flu in my adult life.

I opted out of getting the H1N1 last year and think I will this year too. Again, I've probably already been exposed - there was a week last year in Sept or Oct where it hit our city hard and we had 5 or 6 students at school every day, max.

  • I don't know.  I do normally get the regular flu shot - DD has asthma and so she needs to get it (makes her high risk).  So I always get it too, especially working at a school with all the kid germs.  I did not get the H1N1 - it made me nervous.  I am not sure what to do since the shots are combined this year.

On the one hand I want to get it and since I am not pregnant yet, I feel liek maybe I should get it fast.  Once I become pregnant, if I haven't gotten it yet, I am not sure what I will do.  I hate having another thing to be all worried about.

  • I have no choice.  I work in healthcare and our hospital mandates us to get it or wear a mask for 8 months.

  • I absolutely will, the flu is much more dangerous than the vacc, plus I work in a hospital!

I totally agree with cutebride.  I got mine last weekend. We're still TTA. I have a 3 month old niece and a 1 week old nephew who I am around often. Plus, I work in a school during the day so I'm exposed to tons of germs.
  • OMG! I have been tossing this idea around for a while and didn't realize all of the dangers of it when prego or ttc. It looks like I will NOT be getting the flu shot.

  • I will be getting it within 2 weeks.  I want to get it before I ovulate, so I have it done and out of the way without the chance of having to get it while pg.  My DH is a pharmacist, and he said it would be fine to get while pg, but I am not comfortable getting it during 1st Tri but I also do not want the flu while pg, so I'd rather just get it now and out of the way.

  • No thanks...I don't believe in it.

I got it twice, once when I was going to be traveling for a month first to Cali then to Guatemala...so I think it made sense because I need a bunch of other shots for traveling out of country anyhow.

The second time I got it DH did too and he swelled up like a balloon...litereally...he had giant swollen glands under his pit that hurt and one whole side of his stomache/side filled up with water or something...it was like a lower boob that he could jiggle.  That to me is not normal or safe.
