  • Yeah!  I had a C Section and it was such a smooth process, I felt nothing but a little pressure when they were pushing her out of me.  She was 9lbs and 11.5 oz.  I also did vomit or attempt to while they were getting her out of me and that was the worse feeling, but I asked for zofran to stop it.  Remember it is a MAJOR surgery, so you will need help.  I had DD in the evening and the next afternoon they pulled my foley, IV, and I showered.  It was an odd feeling almost like I was learning how to walk all over again.  You will be weak.  I bought huge, I mean HUGE underwear, I did not want it to rub on my C Sec site.  I also brought larger than normal lounge pants and larger shirts and my nursing tanks. I had flip flops to shower in and slippers to walk around the room and halls with. You will get progressively stronger, if you get up and walk around.  But you also do not want to overdue it.  I was given a laxative and stool softner and gas drops to help things along.  It worked the second day. I had major gas pains in my shoulder, kinda odd but it is called referred pain. You will also have your food tray go from liquids to soft foods, to whatever.  However I snuck in bagels for the morning after, there is nothing more exciting then a breakfast tray filled with liquid stuff.  My tummy did fine eating a bagel and I asked my Doc to let me eat whatever I wanted.  I was able to nurse my baby fine, I just used a lot of pillows to help support me and if nursing is something you want to do, ask to talk to the lactation consultant.  They are awesome people.  If they give you duramorph in your epi you may have major itching, ask for something to counteract that.  I did not and itched my body so bad it looked like I walked through a fire.  You also may be super hot, thats also due to the med.  Make sure you take you pain meds on a schedule.  Mine were sheduled whenever I asked for them every 4-6 hours and the next day my OB saw me she had them scheduled the meds at certain times.  Just stay on top of your pain, do not wait until you feel it.  It only gets worse and your nurse may be busy when you decide to ask for it.  I took my prescribed pain meds for about a week and a half and did not need it after that.  Make sure you do not overdue it at home, you do not want to bust open you incision.   I also bought larger femine pads, you will bleed.  I hope I covered enough and answered your question.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Good luck and Congrats.

  • Congrats!!! I'm sure you'll be fine...the 28th is my mom's b-day :)
  • I have had 2 c-sections and the experiences couldn't be more different.  The first one was not pleasant.  My wound opened up but that what somewhat unusual. But my most recent one in March was a breeze.  I was up and walking around within a day or so and off my meds in less than a week.  The first poster was pretty much right on with what usually happens.  I completely forgot about the itching until she mentioned it.  I was in hell with the itching...OMG...it was horrible.  But once they remove that particular medication (forgot which one) you're good.  Also something else that happens afterward is you actually have contractions, or at least I did, and that's what they told me I was experiencing. Not something I expected at all.  Also after you've had the baby, like while in recovery, you might experience some shaking too.

Once you are able to, make sure you drink as much liquid as you can, to flush out all the junk they just pumped in you and once your pee is clear(er) they will be able to remove your catheter.

Good luck to you, I am sure you will fine.

  • JamicanBride--yes, the itching!  The horrible itching!  It's all coming back.  I actually also itched a lot during the last trimester of pregnancy.  It was miserable.

  • Mine was an emergency one but all in all very easy.  During you will feel a lot of tugging and pressure but no pain.  It is kind of starnge.  You are in recovery for about an hour.  I had bad chills from the epidural and once feeling started to come back in my legs I couldn't stop shaking them. It felt like I was trying to wake up a foot that had fallen asleep.  I had to stay in bed and eat a clear diet for roughly 24 hours.  I think it is best to get up and move as soon as you are able...this will help you recover more quickly.  You will be sore but just take any pain meds they offer.  Coughing and laughing do hurt pretty bad for a few days.  You can press a pillow against your stomache as you move to help.

I never took anything more than Motrin for pain and was out of the hospital within 48 hours of the c/s.  Good luck!

  • I'm having a repeat c-section on 9/28 too! PPs are right on. You'll do fine. Good luck!

  • Congrats! Mine was estimated at 6 and a half pounds at 35 weeks and she was born 9 lbs 11 oz at 40 weeks. Scheduled c-section for me, too.

Mine was super easy. I got nauseous, but never threw up. I hardly felt anything but a little tugging... I did have some itching afterwards, but it wasn't terrible. Annoying, but I got over it. I actually got fed a full meal around 12 hours after my c-section, not just liquids. They brought me a sandwich! I was soooo hungry. They took my catheter out once I could feel my legs again and the IV the next day. The strangest part was feeling so empty and hollow inside. I couldn't lie on my side for a week or two because it hurt. I bought granny panties a size up, and was fine with it.. I switched to them after a couple of days. And to my own pads. So much nicer. I was down to just vicodin and advil/motrin by the time I went home, and then only took each a couple of times after I was home. I had a really easy recovery.

In our case, DD got taken to the NICU since she had fluid in her lungs and breathing decels, so she wasn't with us in the room until she was 3 days old.

Biggest advice: keep up with the pain meds in the hospital and rest. Also take the stool softeners and gas meds. They will help.
