Traveling to a different time zone

At the end of October DH and I are thinking about taking a trip to CA for a 5 day weekend. I am wondering if anyone has ever traveled to different time zones with a little one before. Do we keep him on his regular schedule as if we were still home, or adjust it for the new time? His internal clock isn't going to know that it's 6pm and not 9pm, so what is the best way to deal with that? The traveling is going to be enough on him, I want to try to make it as easy as possible for him to adjust. TIA!

Re: Traveling to a different time zone

  • We traveled to Arizona when my DD was 14 months ... a three-hour change. Surprisingly, she adjusted really well. Her usual bedtime was 8 p.m. and she usually slept until 7:30 a.m. Once out there, I decided to keep her up as late as I could the first night, and there was enough activity to keep her awake until 7 p.m. (Arizona time).  She did get up at 6 (so 9), which was fine. I think her body clock adjusted better than mine.

    Good luck.

  • We took our son to Italy last year when he was almost 3.  It took about 3 days for him to adjust (8 hour time difference).  We let him adjust but we were there 16 days so we had to.  I guess I would let your little one do whataver works.....it's so hard to force a schedule sometimes.  I am lucky though because my DS will sleep anywhere....he slept in his stroller the entire time we were on a Vatican Tour...even with us carrying the stroller up/down the stairs -LOL!  Good luck!
