Bottle..So Many Choices!

The bottle situation has me perplexed. I plan to hopefully breastfeed but realize things don't always work out.  I was planning on having a few bottles on hand but unsure of what to go with?  I liked the idea of glass, but super expensive.  Then I looked into Tom Tipee, but was $17.99 for 2 bottles!  I find this price a little expensive for plastic bottles.  What bottles have you used with success or register for?

  • Playtex Drop-Ins... they were awesome and easy, we love every single aspect. I plan to get new nipples and reuse with my next!

  • First of all, don't buy a ton of one kind in case your baby is picky.  And don't open them all either and keep your receipts in case you have to get a different kind.  As for type, my personal preference is the Playtex Drop Ins- less pieces to clean and BF friendly.  If you want to use a bottle warmer (I liked mine but most people think they are a waste), you can't use the drop in liners so I would do a few Playtex Ventaire Wide so that you can at least use the same nipples and just swap back and forth.  The Avents leaked terribly for us.  Dr. Browns are good if you have a gassy/reflux baby, but otherwise- way too many parts to clean.  Same goes for Born Free- although they don't have as many parts.  I've also heard complaints about the Tommy Tippee's leaking and being too fat to fit in some bottle warmers (if you end up using one of these).  If you want more comments, just check the reviews on each kind on Amazon... that will give you a more thorough review.

I have a question about the drop-ins.  I've used them in the past as a nanny, and really liked them, but the baby was fed formula.  I hope to BF, so if I pump how do I store the milk then transfer it into the drop ins?  Sorry if this is a stupid question- I'm new at this! When I read the reviews online, this was one complaint- that they aren't compatible with pumping.

Not a stupid question at all.  You would just pump straight into the pump bottles that come with it and then transfer the breast milk into separate storage bags (I always used Lansinoh brand but there are others).  Put the date on the storage bag and stick it in the freezer.  Now this is where you might need to consider a bottle warmer.  I'm all for teaching baby to take their bottles at room temp, but cold from the fridge is another story.  My DS would have never waited for me to heat up his bottles with a cup of hot water.  So if you plan to do this, a bottle warmer and a few Playtex Ventaires might just be a worthwhile investment :-)

  • We tried Tommy Tippee first, and DD didn't like the nipples at all. We were using the Midela ones that go with the pump, but the nipples were too fast for her at first. Our babysitter recommend Dr. Browns, so we got some of those, and I think that's what we'll stick with now.

I like that they fit on the pump, so I can pump directly into them if I want to. They do have a lot of parts to clean, but they really do make DD less burpy.

  • We bought MAM Anti-Colic and Nuby Natural Flow.  The Nuby's are silicone and soft and the nipples resemble a breast so hopefully he likes one of these at least.  I am also breastfeeding but plan to pump and bottle feed when needed.
  • We have a selection to try with DD - Mam, Avent, Playtex Drop ins and a few other random ones that people gave us.

  • we use tommee tippee and nuby.  DS was bottle fed from week one and did not have nipple confusion because we used breast shaped nipples.  I registered and was gifted the tommee tippees but I remember them being $17.99 for 3 so it sounds like they have gone up.  I would just try 1 of each in several different brands until you find something you like

  • We are going to try the Dr. Brown's and Tommee Tippee bottles. I'm not sure which Tommee Tippee bottles you were looking at but they were $17.99 for a 3 pack of the regular ones at BRU today. I know the decorative ones are more expensive.
