Cloth Diapering

Q for anyone who uses baby washclothes as cloth wipes

I bought a bottle of Smart Water, I thought it had one of those pull tops figuring I could use that to wet the wipes, but its not, its got a spout thats open so you don't squeeze to get water out, it just pours out slowly.

Anyways, I find that its pretty messy.  The water sits on the washcloth rather than absorbing into it right away so its ends up dripping everywhere.  Am I don't something wrong?  Do I need to prep the wash clothes a certain way to make them absorb the water faster?

Any tips would be great!

  • I use a spray bottle, and just spray the wipe.  It works really well for us.  And no, you don't need to prep the washcloths.
  • The method that I have found works best is to keep a plastic wipes container (I have a huggies one) filled about 1/3 with water and a little baby wash or cetaphil soap. I just dunk a dry cloth wipe in that and use it for diaper changes. I never found spraying the wipe to work for me. Spraying the baby and then wiping works well, too, but the changing pad always got wet that way.

I just put fresh water in the wipes box every 2 days, when I do diaper laundry.

  • I have my diapers and changing area in the bathroom, and i just run them under warm water.
  • I use a small spray bottle with a tsp. of Burt's Bees baby wash, a drop of baby oil, and a tsp. of apple cider vinegar and fill the rest up with water.  The little bottle lasts about 2 days.  I spray it on the washcloth or sometimes directly on the bum.

  • I found my washcloths needed to go through a few loads of laundry with cd safe detergent or they repelled like crazy. Now they work great.

  • I keep mine in a wipes warmer with plain water.  Works great for me.

This exactly. We use 3c water, 1T babywash, and 1T baby oil. Also, we keep the washcloths in a neat pile on the changing table next to the Huggies container. I tried folding the wipes up IN the Huggies container and pouring the solution over them but they were way too wet that way.

  • I use a wipe warmer.

I dumb all of my washcloths into water in the sink. Then I take them out one by one, squeeze out the water, and roll them up. Then I place them all in the wipe warmer, so they are ready to go when she needs a diaper change.

I've done the other methods and to me, this is  by far the easiest.

this is exactly what i do, except lately i just wad the cloths up and throw them in the warmer instead of rolling them ;)  i don't love using the warmer but it's incredibly convenient.
