Pregnant after IF

Allergic reaction to progesterone?

This was our second IVF, both with progesterone in ethyl oleate. This time I started the injections two weeks ago, with no problems initially. A week ago I started getting extremely itchy and giant raised welts all across my body. While all parts of my body are susceptible to them, my injection sites seem to be the worst. I asked my RE about it yesterday, and wonderful man as he is, told me, "Take benadryl and see a dermatologist." Anyone have any experience with this? I think I'm on the injections for another six weeks!

Re: Allergic reaction to progesterone?

  • It could be a reaction to the oil?  When I did PIO I got huge welts and my bum hurt like crazy!  This last cycle I was switched to suppositories and they were so much better!  Will your RE let you swtich?

  • I'm on suppositories, so I don't have any direct experience, but I've read, on here, about people developing an allergy to the oil. I think that once they switched to a different kind of oil, they were usually fine. Can you ask your RE about that?
  • You should ask to be switched to olive oil. Very low rate of reaction. And your RE sounds like a peach.

  • I had the same reaction to PIO in sesame oil and was switched over too olive oil. It shouldn't be a bog deal to switch you, I'm not sure what's up with your RE's reaction.

  • The same happened to me - it's an allergy to the oil, not the hormone.  My RE said it's pretty common to surface after a few weeks of use.  He switched me to progesterone in olive oil and that solved the issue.

I used topical Benadryl to treat the welts and the itchiness.  Good luck!

  • I originally formed a reaction to the P in sesame oil, they then switched me to the ethyl oleate and after about 3 weeks on that, I also became allergic to it.  I ended up sticking it out for the last few weeks on it and used topical anti-itch cream.  It sucked though and i am sorry that you are going through this!
  • I had the same issue, and when I called my RE she said "why aren't you on the suppositories?"  Uh, because I was never given that option by your office...  To which she said that she preferred Endometrin to PIO and I switched that day.  It took almost a full 2 weeks for those welts to go away for me.    Good luck!
  • It hasn't happened to me, but I have heard many ladies on these boards say that they developed an allergy to the type of oil that the progesterone is mixed in. Your RE should be able to prescribe PIO in a different type of oil. Good luck!
