1st Trimester

I feel fat...

Before I knew I was pregnant I haden't weighed myself for a while because I try to go by how I feel (I was a bout 15lbs overweight though).  I weighed myself today and it said I was 6lbs heavier than a few months ago.  I am just frustrated, because I am a healthy eater, and have been exercising 5 days a week since April. I want to eat right for the baby, but without too much weight gain.  I read that if you are overweight you should only gain about 15-25lbs rather than 25-30. That is what I am going for, but if I have already gained 6lbs, it doesn't look good.  I am only 6weeks, what am I doing wrong? Anyone else feel this way?

Re: I feel fat...

  • I definitely feel fat!!  Bloat is so horrible in 1st tri.  I only gained 30lbs with DD, but I failed to lose about 10 of those pounds so I will definitely be looking not to gain a whole lot this time around.  My goal is to drink lots and lots of water.  I think thats what kept me from gaining a lot last time.

  • That makes me feel better, and maybeI will try drinking lots of water also.

  • What time of day are you weighing yourself? I know morning and evening can make a huge difference for me, especially when feeling bloated in the evening.

  • Well, you don't actually know that you gained all 6 lbs since you became pregnant.  You should choose healthy options, but now is not the time to diet.  Take care of yourself and your baby.

  • Yep, I ws about 1o lbs overweight when the summer started, and then gained 15 pounds!!!(I was depressed after m/c and ate, and ate, and ate) So now I'm 25 lbs over weight and super scared of gaining too much with this baby. I am so tired right now I can't workout, but I am trying to eat healthy and I am drinking a ton of water. I hope it all helps!!

  • Hopefully I can say something helpful here. My last pregnancy I started out 15 pounds overweight and went on to gain 10 in the first 2 months. It then leveled off. I didn't feel the need to eat ALL THE TIME after the first tri, so at the end  I really only gained 30 pounds - I think the earlier poster had it right - the bloating throws off your weight something crazy - water weight can be incredible. (oh and I couldn't workout either).

So after I had my daughter I had 40 pounds to lose and I did it through calorie counting and good eating plus a lot of pilates. It took like 9 months to finish, but I was able to get down to my goal weight before getting BFP again.

Now I'm going in to this pregnancy with a whole different outlook. It's easy to say now (I don't have the nausea yet), but I hope to only gorge myself with healthy foods (last time I couldn't stop eating Kraft macaroni and cheese and Udon noodle soup).

  • Yes i would definitely have to agree with the posters on bloating and when you are weighing yourself...both pregnancies i gained a lot the first trimester and then it leveled off...this time, so far i have only gained a couple of pounds...but don't worry too much about it, as long as you are eating healthy, getting exercise, oh something my doctor told me this last pregnancy was to watch the sugar intake because that can make you gain...he had me use splenda in the last couple of months and just that little change helped me to actually lose a few pounds and stay where i needed to be. fruits that have lots of sugars in them can be tricky because you think you are eating healthy but they are causing you to gain (bananas, grapes, watermelon) so try that and see if it helps good luck!
  • Noiyah73 - good point about the sugar. I'm going to have to keep that front of mind this time around. More vegetables is my plan this time - we'll see if I can keep up with it...

Also I'm going to attempt to do pilates 2x per week until the baby comes. I can't sign myself up for more than that b/c I know I won't do it :)

  • The bloating it terrible, it is mostly water at this stage I think though.  I weighed myself sunday because I felt fat and huge and then I weighed again this morning and i was 4 pounds lighter today.  Drink a lot of water and it should help.  It helps me also I feel better when I am hydrated.

  • Ya I guess I don't know it all came from being pregnant, but i feel bigger since i've got the BFP.  I am happy to hear that it might even out eventually, and I will just have to keep up the workin out and eating right.  Thanks for all the positive and helpful feedback :)
