Cloth Diapering

Do I need to strip?

I read the link below on how to strip, but I'm wondering if I need to. I read another post the other day where a mom said her LO's diapers smell like ammonia when they're going into the wash. Frankie's diapers and pail always smell like ammonia. Is this build up and I just didn't know it? Do I need to strip my diapers?? I've started doing baking soda in the wash cycle then an extra rinse at the end with white vinegar (only on one wash so far). Will this do the trick for the ammonia if I don't need to strip? When should I start smelling a difference? I never notice a stink when they're clean and dry or even being worn by DD...just in the pail and going into the washing machine. I guess I just don't know if this is "normal" or not...

Help? Confused

Re: Do I need to strip?

  • Stripping is needed for repelling - if you aren't having that issue you're probably fine.  Ammonia buildup in the pail is normal.  But if you had an immediate and strong, almost burning, ammonia smell as soon as your DD peed in a diaper then you might have an actual ammonia problem.  But it doesn't sound like you do.  My vote is "normal."

No, no repelling issues. The diapers are still functioning quite well. We also have no immediate smell after she pees. It's usually when the pail is opened and when we go into her room after she wakes up from her 12-15 hours of sleep at night.

I'm so glad I'm getting a "normal" vote. I so don't want to have to strip my diapers! Lol!

  • Ya, if they didn't smell like pee after 12-15 hours I'd suggest that your daughter's pee is awesome!  :)
