School-Aged Children

anyone have this issue when their dc was prek

so... dd has never been all that into art projects or learning to write.  I let it be for a while... trying for just a couple of minutes and then leaving her be b/c she'd get frustrated.  well, at the end of last school year, she came home with some great art projects and worksheets... some where they started working on writing.  she's written her name a few times for me over the last 6 months but that's it.  I've tried buying fun workbooks, printed sheets, bought the leapfrog scribble and write, got fun coloring books, got new art supplies. she's just not into it with me.  IDK if she only does it at school b/c of the friends doing it...  ??? her brother gets into it. in fact he (not quite 3) is at least trying to stay in the lines when we color... dd just scribbles over the page and then off to play dress up /pretend/dolls whatever.  she is into reading.  anyone else?  any ideas?  I was trying to keep up with it over the summer and we got nowhere.  she starts prek in 3 wks.   should I just leave it be.  I just have a feeling homework will be a nightmare in a couple of years.  I need to get dh to try with her.... she's into reading. she knows a lot that I think most 4 y/os wouldn't b/c she asks a lot of questions (like what the kidneys do and naming organs, knowing what lichen is... stuff that comes up b/c I'm a nurse and dh is a scientist... not the most artsy people in the world but we try).  I'm just frustrated... worry about her being behind when school starts.

  • DS isn't really into art projects - just not his thing.  He does them -at home and school - just the bare minimum.  His is always the least adorned of the whole class.

He does write - been writing his name since he was 3.  Sometimes goes around with a little book making lists of words he asks me to spell.  But, art - not so much.

In fact, DD who is only 2 already likes art better.  She's way more serious about coloring than he ever has been and is trying to write already.

I wouldn't worry too much - maybe it's just not her thing.

  • DS could write his name when he started kinder.  That's it.

They can't read yet, so I don't think we expect them to write.

  • Kids work on different things at different times.  I'd incorporate it more into play.  Like...talk about the first letter of her name & what other things start w/that letter/sound- write it on the chalkboard & draw some other things that start w/that letter.  you could do that with each letter of her name to make it a fun game.  I would not push it though- it will come in time!
  • DS is that way too.  he has a very limited attention span for art projects at home, especially iin comparison to his little sister, couldn't care less about coloring in the lines (or at all) and can write but doesn't like to practice at home.  The things that do seem to work are to buy inexpensive different activities at Joann's, like a simple threading project, painting a bird house, etc.  Nothing too elaborate or themey.  And, to have him write letters to people.  He likes writing something with a purpose, but not practicing (can't really blame him).  he likes playdoh ok and that helps with fine motor skills too.
    DS1 age 7, DD age 5 and DS2 born 4/3/12
  • DD's daycare/preschool teacher told me the other day that a lot of kids go into 4K not knowing letters or numbers at all. I think she'll be fine. She'll follow along with what the other kids are doing.
