how to switch from one formula to another

LO is on GoodStart....still really fussy, and gassy.

Doctor thinks reflux could  be the problem. LO is on Zantac. :( I am at my witts end. Thinking maybe I should switch to either soy or similac sensitive.

How do I transition him? I am assuming not just one for the other..should I slowly switch?

Thanks

Re: how to switch from one formula to another

  • With DD we went from Similac to Enfamil and saw a change immediately. They say it can take up to 2 weeks for LO's to get used to new formula though.
  • Loading the player...
  • don't switch to soy without talking to the pedi about it... an LO on soy can cause real problems if they don't truly need it.

but if you just wanna change to a different formula definitely do it slowly... if you're lo's doin 4oz for example, do 1.5 scoops of the formula they're on and .5 scoop of the new stuff... do that for about a week, then do it 1 and 1 for a week, make sure you're watching LO's reaction.. if it's good, then do 1.5 with the new and .5 with the old for another few days then completely put them on it after that.

  • DS has AR too... We tried soy once when he was really colicy to see if that would help but he wouldn't take the bottle, he kept spitting it out. It smells really bad so I'm assuming it tastes bad too lol.

We switched DS from Enfamil to Good Start and he does fine. He still gets some of both until we run out of our open Enfamil. I'm assuming the milk based formulas all taste pretty similar because DS never has an issue having both.

  • We switched cold turkey.  All of the packaging says there is no reason to do it slowly and the pedi said the same thing.

  • I've heard that Zantac loses its effectiveness pretty quickly. Perhaps you could ask about Prevacid. Our LO takes it 3 times a day and his reflux is so much better!

  • We switched Similar regular to Similar sensitive cold turkey. It helped right away with gas but he got constipated, really constipated. It went from normal poo to hard clumpy poo and much less frequent. We finally had to see the pedi for some fixes. He was up all night trying to get things going and only slept for an hour at a time which made us miserable.I'm not sure if most of that was age but if we ever have to switch again we'll transition it.

    I'd defiantly transition slowly.
