I have read positives and negatives about g-diapers but my husband LOVES the idea of them. ?I wanted to get them specifically for traveling. Well, our local store was having a sale on starter kits (two diapers + 10 disposable liners) with an additional percentage off. ?Needless to say I went ahead and decided to buy 4 diapers in sm, med, and large (we have a total of 12 diapers and each one has a second liner). ?I figure that should be great for traveling.
They sound so easy - just wash the cloth liner and rinse the plastic liner. ?Could I get by with just using the four diapers during the day with many different cloth inserts? ?Or should I buy BGs or other kinds of diapers to have as well? ?I was also thinking that maybe I should get fitted with covers for the nighttime?
I am still early in pregnancy so I have A LOT of time to plan but figured when I see things on sale I should just pick them up. ?I saved myself over $100 today!?

Re: How many g-diapers. Do I need fitteds or AIOs as well?
That's what we bought the Gs for and they work really well! I also use the covers full time with our pre-folds. Just too expensive for us to do full time with the flushable inserts.
For the newborn stage, you'll need more than 4 covers. We had 7 covers and 1 AIO and sometimes I could make it to every other day washing. TMI, but newborn poo is really runny and can fit through small openings, like the leg gussets even if you've got them on correctly. So it's not always safe to assume with the Gs that you'll only need to be changing the liner. We had 4 covers for traveling and on our first trip w/ DD at 2 mos I was handwashing liners and gpants in the hotel sink every night. DD went through all 4 almost daily. When your LO gets bigger and is eating solids, you should be golden with 4 covers for the day, probably for 2 days.
I would highly recommend checking out pfs, especially for the newborn stage. They outgrow them so quickly, it seems like such a waste to me to buy fitteds. Pfs work really well and are super easy. There are no pins or special folding required. Just fold in thirds and stick in cover, done. We spent $200 on our newborn stash and $200 on our big girl stash. DD was in the newborn diapers for about 2 1/2 mos. For nighttime, we found if we double her up and add 2 layers of fleece (just fleece I cut from the bolt I bought at JoAnn's) she stays asleep and feels dry all night long.
Congrats and great find! We're leaving for Disney in 3 weeks and have to buy more inserts and quite possibly more gpants and I can't find any good deals!
?Thank you so much! Great advice and its great to hear someone else's experience. ?I was wondering about the newborn poop being runny so I am glad that you mentioned it :-)??
we LOVE our g's!!
If you want to use Gdiapers fulltime and you only want to wash every few days then you will need more.
For newborn they sell a baby bundle that comes with 12 tiny g's and 6 smalls. Yes, you WILL use all 12. Like the OP said the runny poop is messy. With 12 tiny gs that will be enough for maybe 1-2 days.
We survived with 8 small covers and 8 medium covers and 24 gcloths in each size. Plus we got 16 liners. This made it possible for me to only do laundry every 3-4 days. LOVE it. Its great to have backup liners when the poop gets all over. (Which btw, you CAN wash liners in the washing machine, they just need to be hung to dry)
We havent reached the large size yet but we have purchased 8 of those as well. Our total price to cloth diaper from newborn to now (14 months) has been about $400. And the best part, we get to use it all again for baby #2.
oh and if you use the flushie inserts, that will be an added cost. We only use those for long travels. Otherwise we just use cloth fulltime even when out and about. Make sure to get some wetbags for home and out. Try www.planetwise.com Good luck! Message me if you have more questions.
