travel insurance question

I have plans to travel to Washington when I'm 34ish weeks.  I don't expect anything will happen, DS wasn't born till 42 weeks, but I still want to be insured and I've recently been told it may be difficult to find insurance to cover me because pregnancy is considered a "pre-existing condition".

Just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with this sort of thing and if you were able to find insurance, where you got it through??

TIA

Re: travel insurance question

  • Hi - unfortunately I can't help you much on insurance, but the one question I do have - how long do you anticipate being down in Washington?  (Just because you do need to be careful about travelling after 36 weeks.)  Also - are you flying or driving? - as some air carriers may refuse to carry you after that point in time.  Lastly, check with your doctor so that they know - I did with mine, and even though I was travelling at 28 weeks, she still kept quite a close eye on me around that time to make sure that everything was okay (even though I was just flying from Winnipeg-Toronto).

Have a good trip and I hope it all goes well for you!

  • I think there was a post on here (or maybe it was the Toronto board) about this and they said that you can not get travelers insurance.
  • Most, if not all, companies will not insure you once you are past the 31w/32w mark. I got travel insurance today since we are going down to Oregon for a few days. I'm nearly 25w and the lady I dealt with said I'd be fine, their policy is that they can't insure if you are 32w or over.

  • what insurance companies are you using?? would RBC Insurance cover someone at 8 weeks?? i'll have to call and find out - we're going from BC to drive down to California for 13 days...i would never have thought that prenancy was a preexsisting condition before i read this but i guess that makes sense!

always something new to think about!  Indifferent

  • Most companies will not insure you if you are 31 weeks or over. They will cover you for things unrelated to pregnancy but they do not cover complications resulting from pregnancy or unexpected birth of a child. Which by the way, freaking expensive in the states. 8-9k usd for a normal by the books birth, 10-12k for a c-section.

If you don't need to go, I wouldn't.
