Popcorn. What age?

Dh and I don't eat grains so we don't normally have popcorn around so ds has never had any. However, ds is about to start preschool and I'm going to be sending most of his snacks. I was thinking that popcorn might be a good option to mix it up (probably tossed in with some nuts and dried fruits in a "trail mix"). Is 2.5 too young for popcorn? I know the "recommended age" is 4 but have your younger kids had any chewing/choking issues with it?

Re: Popcorn. What age?

  • I think DS was 4 before he had popcorn, mostly because he refused to try it earlier. I probably wouldn't send popcorn as a snack for younger kids because of the choking issue. It's one thing if you are right there when he is eating it at first, but another if he's in a room of kids with only one or two adults.
  • I think B was around there, probably younger when she had it.

  • I don't think its too young.  My almost 2 y.o. has had popcorn twice recently and had no issues with it at all.

    Us too.

  • At daycare, they started popcorn in the preschool room, which is about 2 and a half to 3 yr olds.

Once I saw daycare do it, I did.

  • Giada loves eating pop corn and watching movies. She has been eating it since she was about 2 years old and never had any problem.
  • My kids are 2 1/2 and 4 and both eat popcorn and have had for a few months.  We only have it as a snack when we are all sitting together like when we watch a movie or something along those lines so we can keep a close eye on them and also make sure they are sitting and not moving around.
