Natural Birth

Paging Mamabirdtobe!

Hey, I just noticed in your post a/b homebirths that you are from Oklahoma! I am too! DH and I are also looking into our options for homebirthing (After I watched The Business of Being Born and amongst my other convictions). I haven't done a TON of research thus far, but didn't realize that OK was so un-midwife friendly.......Would love to hear back from you and see what you find out!

Re: Paging Mamabirdtobe!

  • Hey girl!

Oklahoma is VERY midwife unfriendly. OU medical center allows midwife assisted birth, but they provide the midwife for you. I don't really like that, and would want to chose my own midwife. They're the only option as far as a hospital goes.

There is nothing as far as birthing centers go, but there is a wonderful place in Norman called Community Midwife Services. I have a couple friends and clients who have used them. They have a small birthing cottage, or they will assist you at home. We have a consultation set up next week, and we'll decide where to go from there.

    Here is their website:

They have been incredibly helpful and sweet every time I've spoken with them. One night I was just feeling really emotional and worried about everything and I called up there around 7:30, not expecting to get a hold of anything but a machine. One of the midwives stayed on the phone with me and we talked until I felt better about everything. She was incredibly helpful and detailed, telling me everything from the exact week of every appointment to the cost of it all.

Let me know if you need any more info!

  • Thanks so much! One of my dear friends (and experienced homebirther) reccomended Heaven Sent Birth to me. I am planning on attending a monthly meeting on the 21st so hopefully they can answer any questions for me then.

I am planning on doing a homebirth, so I won't be needing the actual birthing center. Also, do you know if any midwife service in OK is covered by Sooner Care? We are just worried a/b the financial aspect of everything at this point.

    Thanks so much again!

  • We're in the exact same boat. My midwife actually went over that with me over the phone, but she was giving me so much info that it slipped my mind. I think she said that Soonercare covers the cost of one ultrasound, but not the actual midwife services. I'd check with them!
