Baby Names

Nicknames

I'm expecting my second child in September - gender unknown - and am trying to come up with a boy's name.  My husband and I like Beckett, but are in a debate over whether or not the baby will be called Beck automatically (by other people, not us) or not.

What do you think?  Does the name Beckett automatically (in most situations) assume the nickname Beck?

Re: Nicknames

  • Beck seems like the most natural nickname for Beckett.  However, if you introduced your child to me as Beckett, I would call him Beckett.  I wouldn't automatically use the nickname.

  • I believe most people (except for maybe the most ardent I-don't-care-what-you-think name choppers) will take cues from the parents. If you name him Beckett and call him Beckett, chances are most people will watch/listen to you and follow along. When he gets older and starts playing with his name, then its out of your hands. For me, I wouldn't automatically shorten it. HTH!

This is exactly what I was trying to say, but braveangel's version makes more sense.Big Smile

Okay, that's funny because I looked at yours and thought it was short and sweet - I swear I can't answer less than a paragraph Stick out tongue

  • I think Beck is an obvious nn, but is that really a bad thing?  I think Beck is a cute nn. If you want him to go by Beckett, just call him that and hopefully most people will just go with it.
