hcg levels increase but nothing on ultrasound

Hi Ladies!!  I am new to this pregnancy thing as I am just in the trying stages but have a friend I am concerned for.....  Positive preg test  2 1/2 weeks ago then started bleeding a week ago today...went to dr and had levels drawn and was at 653....wednesday they went up to 868 and friday up to 1300.  Today she had a vag u/s and they see NOTHING!!  her levels were drawn again and they are 1835.  Dr's are planning to do another u/s and draw levels again on wednesay...they say if nothing shows on the u/s and levels are still raising they will look at giving her meds to end preg???  This confuses me as how can you end a preg that you dont see.  The reasoning they are giving her is that it's prob ectopic but I thought you would see that on u/s!!  I am having a hard time knowing what to say to her in the first place but am having problems grasping "ending the pregnancy" if hcg keeps raising???  ANY ideas??  Thanks in Advance!

Re: hcg levels increase but nothing on ultrasound

  • Can't see anything at all or can't see a baby?

They should at least be able to see where the gestational sac is - ute or ectopic.

It's normal to not be able to see the baby yet.  Hcg needs to be at least 1500 to see anything, so it could just be too early for an ultrasound.

Good luck.  I hope it all works out.

  • they are saying they cant see ANYTHING!!!  and had told her that as soon as her HCG was over 1600 they should see something so after today it being 1835 she is very concerned!!
  • Your panic response is probably not helping her.

It might be too early, or it might end in a loss.  It's really too early to tell.  You should just tell her that you're hoping for the best and there for her if she needs to talk.

Telling her that she should definitely be able to see something after 1600 is not accurate and not helpful.  Sounds like you need to calm down and just be there to listen, stop giving her advice that sounds like fact.

I read this as the Dr. was telling her they were concerned b/c they should for sure see something at this point, not the friend.  And just because someone is on here freaking out to us, in cyberspace, doesn't mean she is also freaking out to her friend's face.

  • I can't tell you anything about not seeing anything on the ultrasound; but I did have my betas continue to go up (and were abnormally high) after my first m/c was discovered. So, it is possible to not have a viable pregnancy and still have numbers go up. Hopefully they'll schedule her for a follow up U/S soon.
  • Basically, she just needs to have an u/s at around 6.5 - 7 weeks. That's the only way they'll know anything. It could be a chemical pg, or she could have had late ovulation and there's just not much to see yet. She should refuse any pg ending drugs until after she is absolutely sure that she is over 6 wks pg and an u/s confirms that the pregnancy will miscarry.

It's sad and it sucks, but that really is the only way to know... to wait. Though the bleeding does kind of indicate that she was pg, and lost it and that's why nothing is showing on the u/s. With hcg still rising though, she'll want to make sure.

  • This happened to me almost word for word. They were never able to see my first pregnancy on ultrasound and my levels continued to rise. After about 6 weeks they gave me a drug to end the pregnancy that they couldn't find because of the risk of ectopic. Two days later I had severe stomach pain and called the doctor who had me immediately in for an exploratory surgery. They found the ectopic pregnancy they couldn't see on ultra sound and apparently the drug hadn't helped and my tube was nearing rupture. I got lucky they and they caught it. On the bright side I conceived my son two months latter with out complications. I'm sorry your friend is going through this. Even though the pregnancy was never viable I still felt incredibly disappointed and sad at the loss of the pregnancy.

  • that's what happened to me with my ectopic.  i refused the drugs, then by the time they were able to see where the baby was, my tube almost ruptured and they had to remove it.

i'll pray everything turns out okay for her.
