Had my first breakdown in a while last night

Ally is a horrible sleeper, but we still haven't gone to CIO.  Well...we did one day last week, and I definitely don't think she'll "get it".  She didn't even claim down when I went in 5 mins to check up on her. (at least with Emmy, she calmed down when she saw me).  So we would let her cry for another 10 mins, and then DH would end up rocking her after that and she would still cry even with someone rocking her because she's just so p!ssed that we did that to her.  Anyhow...I'm just exhausted and after 7 months, it finally hit me how tired I am.  DH stayed up with her until 2am last night but then told me that he couldn't handle it anymore and was going to lose it if he didn't sleep.  Then I took over and she finally fell asleep at 3am.  But then I couldn't sleep after that!  I was sooo freaked out that I couldn't sleep and then I looked at the clock and it was already 4:45!  I wake up at 5:30 to get ready for work.  I just started balling....

Anyhow...I decided to take her to the pedi this morning because I felt something just wasn't right, and turns out that she has an ear infection (she has no fever, she wasn't pulling on her ears, and her cold was for only 2 days and it happened about 2 weeks ago) I REALLY REALLY hope that this is the reason why she' been waking up (although she didn't have an ear infection the other months and still was a horrible sleeper).  Did I mention how exhausted I am?  =(

  • You have my complete and utter sympathy because I am in the same boat, well minus the ear infection.  Cooper just does not need as much sleep as he's "supposed" to.   He is not usually hard to put down (though I've definitely had nights like you describe) but he wakes up every 2-3 hours, he's like a little clock.  At best he sleeps from 9-6 with two wake ups during the night.   At SIL's party over the weekend everyone started commenting at 8:00 "Gosh he's still up?!"  By 10:30 it was "why isn't he cranky yet?!"  Then in the morning he got up bright and cheery at 7:30.  Uh yeah, I've told you, he doesn't sleep much, did you not believe me??  His mama needs sleep, he does not.

And CIO would not work on him because neither DH or I can calm him AT ALL without picking him up, rocking, walking or nursing him.  He just gets more and more and more pissed off.   Every few weeks we have a good week and I think "Hallelujah! He's learning to sleep."  Then it changes again and I have another breakdown night because OMG I'm SO TIRED!

Sigh.  they'll sleep through the night one day, right?

My mom swears I did the exact same thing and did not learn to sleep longer stretches until after I was a year old.  Payback is a b!tch.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

I think we have the same baby!!!  I told DH that it'll be better in about 4 months when she's 1, because I can at least start disciplining her a little when she starts understanding.  Time out for 1 min is in the near future for us!

  • ((hugs))  I hope it gets better soon.  I wish I had some solution for you, but I think with some children, it just takes them a lot longer to learn how to sleep longer.  I definitely know of some that CIO didn't work for as well.  Here's to hoping you get some more sleep soon!

We'll have to get them together they can stay up all night and entertain each other while we sleep.  Wink

I told my mom that if he doesn't sleep through the night as a toddler I'm just going to put him to bed on a mattress on the floor and put a mini fridge full of milk in sippy cups in his room and he'll be on his own.   If he still wants to get up every few hours, that's fine, just don't wake mama!

It's definitely a lot easier to handle their crying when they're older versus when they're babies.

  • Oh Lisa, I am so sorry. There is little in life that affects our emotions and health like a lack of sleep, especially when it's beyond your control, and for so many months. I feel anxiety for you reading your post. I really hope it improves soon. Maybe you can hire a baby nurse type of person that people hire for newborns? That way you guys can catch up on your sleep and maybe think more clearly?
