Baby Names

are kids allowed to make fun of other kids' names

at school anymore???  Or with all the PC indoctrination and cultural sensitivity and all that jazz, do you get suspended for it these days?

Re: are kids allowed to make fun of other kids' names

  • Kids will always make fun of other kids.  Whether it's PC or not.  Do you get suspended for it?  Usually not.
  • HA!

As a teacher, I can say that I've heard far weirder names that we usually see on this board.  I guess because we have a very unique mix of all types of Asian names I never heard growing up where I teach, making fun of names doesn't seem to happen nearly as much.

  • I've never heard of them getting suspended for it, but a couple friends of mine that are teachers of school-aged children have said they don't really hear the kids making fun of other kids names anymore.
  • Kids who want to pick will find something to pick on...sometimes a name is the obvious choice.

They would not get suspended for it, not in our district.

  • Sure, of course they do...

  • It happens but less than when I was a student.
  • I never hear my students make fun of each others' names, and I've been teaching 7 years. They are more likely to make fun of clothes, hair, facial features, body types etc..

  • I work in a district that has students from many different cultures and I never hear kids making fun of names.

  • I really don't remember kids making fun of each others' names when I was a kid. Weight, social class, parents' jobs, sure, but not names. Anyhoo where I live kids get away with assaulting teachers so I doubt anyone would even notice if they just made fun of another kids' name.

  • So many kids today have strange, unique and unusual names.  I almost think the ones with normal plain names would be the minority/ones getting made fun of nowadays.

I did subbing for a year, and student taught for a while, and didn't really hear of any names being made fun of in any of the grades pre-k through 12th grade.

  • Kids at my school(s) never made fun of others' names and my 14 year old sister said it's the same at her school now. I think it must just depend on the school and group of kids and that could also affect how they deal with it.

  • tct1219, I don't get your new signature picture. Is XIXMMX supposed to be October 11, 2010 (10-11-2010)? If so, it should be XXIMMX.

I see that you live in Oklahoma, but are you originally from another country, where they usually put the day first, then the month? Because then it would be 11-10-2010, in which case XIXMMX would be correct.

ETA: I see you are saying congrats to a girl named Fatima5968. Maybe that is her due date, and she lives in another country. Yes, that must be it.

  • I'm a teacher, and there are a LOT of strange names these days.  Because of that, not very many people even worry about other people's names.  I've only heard one name comment which was to a girl named Aavieal (said A-V-ale) and the boy was rudely asking where a name like that came from.  She asked the same of him, with his name being Mekiah (said mu-kai, uh) and that was the end of that.  I think the whole making fun of people's names thing is pretty much over.  There's just too many unique names.

As far as being suspended for that, no... it wouldn't happen.  There are far bigger issues at a school than name calling.  If it turned into bullying, that is a serious issue which leads to counseling and eventually suspension if it continues.

  • I just completed my 2nd year of teaching and heard it once. It really isn't as common as people think now, perhaps because there are so many unique/youneek names out there. Kids have moved on to teasing about other things, IMO.

  • I'm a teacher and haven't had any students get suspended for making fun of a kids name, but yes they definitely do make fun of them.  Thats why I am very careful in what I name my kids!  I had a student named Fagner (pronounced Fogner) but you can imagine what the kids were saying.
