Anyone ever use EAP?

I've been going through a really rough time lately and I was wanting to speak to a counselor.  My employer has an Employee Assistance Program that gives us 6 (I think) sessions per calendar year.  I have heard mixed reviews from other people I know ( that I don't work with ) about using EAP.

If you have used EAP for counseling, what is your experience?  I really need some help for managing my stress and anxiety and I thought this would be a good place to start.

TIA.

  • First off, good for your for seeking this out.  1/2 the battle is realizing you could benefit from some support.  I did and it was really no different than using medical insurance for finding a doctor; I think the hard part with mental health is finding a counselor that you connect with.  Usually they will still give you a list to chose from and you need to seek them out.  Do you have anyone you can get a recommendation from once you get the list?  Or maybe ask your PCP for a recommendation?  Also, it might be worthwhile to see if the counselor is also under your insurance plan should you want to continue (so perhaps the first 6 are free and then you have to pay a copay or something).  Best wishes to you and hang in there.

  • I used an EAP through DH's company and my experience was good. I got 8 sessons with zero co-pay which was really great since one of my anxiety triggers was finances.

  • Yup, I have for 2-3 sessions at several points in the past few years.  Each time I've had a great experience!
  • I haven't used it, but my BF and her husband went to marriage counseling through her EAP program and it basically saved their marriage. She recommends it to everyone.

  • You could always find a therapist through EAP and if you connect and need more then the allotted sessions you could fall back on your insurance or pay out if pocket. Most therapists would be willing to work with you on a sliding scale after your benefits run out.

  • Yes.  I used it for pre-marital counseling and in '07 and '10 for my own anxiety and depression issues.  I used a counselor that I knew a few others from work had used and I happened to really like her.  It might take a few tries to find one you like.  GL to you and big hugs.
