Car seat crying and acid reflux?

My LO fusses, wails, and cries almost every time when she is in the car seat. She also frequently spits up when we put her in the car seat. She has acid reflux, and I wonder if that is related? It seems like she is in pain or uncomfortable when she is in the car seat... not just because she doesn't want to be in there. It can be pretty unbearable, and heart wrenching too when she cries so hard she chokes.

Just curious if others have had this issue, and what they have tried? When we are both in the car, one of us sits with her and tries to calm her. We have tried to change the level which the seat is at, but that hasn't helped. Our neighbor (a pediatrician) suggest we try a different brand car seat (that's our next step).

Any suggestions, thoughts, or similar stories would be helpful!

TIA!

Re: Car seat crying and acid reflux?

  • Our first had bad reflux and also hated the Graco carseat. So we never carried him around in it or put it in the stroller. We switched to a Britax convertible at 4 months. That was a little better, though he still didn't like the car much until a month ago when we turned him forward.

  • My DD does the same thing- including the spit up- and it breaks my heart. We try not to take her out too much because of it and when we do, someone sits in back with her which only helps a little. We use the Chicco KeyFit 30 travel system. Which do you use?

We use the Graco Snug Ride. Our neighbor (pediatrician) said she has a ton of different seats and said we can try to borrow one to see if it helps. I hope it does! Does your DD have reflux too?

  • That's strange, because now we're trying to figure out if our baby has reflux, and my Dr. suggested putting him in his car seat for about 30 minutes after each feeding because it's better for him to be upright so he gets less acid in his esophagus....

She occassionaly shows signs of it but not often.

  • ds doesn't have reflux but HATES his graco carseat.  i just ordered a convertible seat to see if our car riding improves.
  • My DS has reflux pretty bad. I was old to keep him upright after feedings for 30-45 minutes so that's what I do. I put him in my moby wrap and that helps tremendously. For the car seat issue, I try to not put him in his carseat until at least an hour after feedings. My pedi told me that him being in the sitting position makes him spit up more and so far, that's holding true. When he is crying in his seat, I pull over, hop in the back seat and take him out for a few minutes to calm him. After that, I put him back in and he's good for a while.

This.  Not the spitting up part but DS hates his car seat as well.  It helped somewhat when we were able to take out the newborn inserts, but I use the Chicco KeyFit 30 too and I read a post on here about a month ago that babies sweat a lot in this seat.  I am beginning to think it IS the car seat that LO does not like.  I thought he would like the car and his car seat by now but apparently not. And we are going on a 5 hour road trip in a few weeks and I am dreading it. GL, I feel your pain.
