So...what should I wash before baby comes?

I have had several people tell me not to wash everything because I wont use it all. I have yet to wash anything yet, but I want to be prepared. What should I wash? I have some PJ's that I bought at a resale shop that can't be returned anyway (plus, they were like $3.99), so I plan on washing those for sure. What else should I wash???

  • I would wash a few newborn items, but that's probably all. DD was in premie for a while and we had none in that size. It wasn't a big deal to have to wash new stuff. I'd bring a couple things to the hospital but wouldnt' worry too much about having a ton of items ready. The baby may be a perfect fit for newborn or it might be too small.

If you feel the need to wash stuff, do all the baby towels, blankets and washcloth stuff

  • After just having my baby, I would have not washed nearly everything that I did.  I could kicked myself because I ended up having a huge kid and she does not fit into her half of her newborn stuff.  So I would wash a few things like PJs and a few onesies and wait to see how big the baby is.  I would also wash all of the bedding and blankets and stuff like that.  Just wait for the clothes, because I untaged and washed EVERYTHING.

  • I wouldn't wash any newborn stuff - DD was 7lbs 5 oz and even she didn't wear them longer than like 2 weeks tops. And even then, she also fit in the 0-3 month stuff so we didn't need to use the newborn stuff. If you need it, have someone wash it while you're still in the hospital.

I would wash a pack of onesies, 3-4 pjs, 3-4 blankets and burp cloths, and the sheets for the PNP or crib or whatever. You'll be doing a lot of laundry the first few weeks so wash as needed after that. I washed EVERYTHING because I was a big time nester and I barely used most of it.

  • We washed a couple of 0-3s and about 5 newborn items.... plus blankets and sheets and such.

She fits NONE of her newborn stuff except the footed sleepers, which are too hot for her anyway (she left a sweat stain on the changing pad so I ended up changing her clothes in the middle of the night.) Granted, I had a monster child at almost 10 pounds, too. Everyone ended up running out and buying us larger clothes because we had the fewest of the 3 month stuff.

this. Ideally I would have someone else wash any clothes for you once you have the baby, if they are willing and able. DD didn't fit in NB clothing at all, but I had already washed a bunch, so it was all donated.

  • Wash the stuff you cannot return (resale stuff, hand-me-downs)

You have 2 days at the hospital where you can use the things they give you there: receiving blankets, little t-shirts). You can decide while still at the hospital which things to wash.

I wish I hadn't wash all the receiving blankets. I now have a huge collection which I cannot return.
