TTC after 35

so when you make the call after 6 months

I'm assuming I call the OB first, right?  Will he do "standard" testing?  And what exactly is this?  I have NO IDEA.  My sister went through it all right up to IVF (has a beautiful DD) but I don't feel ready to talk to her just yet about this.  Hell, I don't even know if I'm going to make "the call."

Can you tell me what the dr will initially do testing for?  TIA

If it's been 6 months, I would just go to a specialist which, unless you need a referral from you OB, you should be able to make an appt for without the OB.

I didn't need a referral but got one anyway from my OB - and had her transfer my records and the testing she'd had done on me to the RE.  I also spoke to a bunch of nurses I know and friends of my sister who had gone to an RE.  They all recommended the same person my OB referred me to so I felt confident.

Testing I had done:  Day 3 bloodwork, HSG, Day 18 bloodwork (I think) and an SHG.  My husband had two S/A's done.  I did all my bloodwork twice - once with the OB and once with my RE.

I felt like I wasted a ton of time with my OB instead of heading straight to the RE. While TTC #1 she had me try for 1 year (@ this time I was under 35) tried me on Clomid for 3 months (after my year was up) with increasing doses and nothing happened, she then referred me to the lamest RE I have ever met (I was never once examined by this guy) so I wasted about 4 months with him doing blood work and an HSG until I finally transfered to another RE that my insurance covered.  Imagine my surprise when on the very first day they did a vaginal ultrasound!!!  I just feel like I wasted about 7 months not going with my gut and getting into the RE right away.  That time it ended up taking me 3 years to get PG. This time I tried for 6 months, my OB wanted to try Clomid for 3 months but I told her only 1 month and then referral to RE.  It's been less than 2 years and we are on IVF #1.

Sorry this is so long I just realized I typed a lot to say go with your gut feeling on how aggressive you want to be and don't let the Dr's drag their feet.

I'm sorry you are having to think about this.  I would highly recommend going straight to an RE.  Some OB's will offer to start treatment but at this point why waste any time and generally the RE's will repeat any testing you let your OB do. I didn't need a referall from my OB - I just called and made the appt myself based on the recs of several friends.

I'm thinking that I would just start with my OB b/c I just want to know if anything is wrong - can an OB do that?  And what would the likelihood of anything being wrong when you have regular periods and ovulate regularly? (I hope I don't offend anyone with that...not my intention at all!)

I haven't even brought this up to DH yet.  I don't know anything about how our insurance will cover it or not (we do live in MA and it's supposed to be covered but who knows w/all the loopholes).  He would totally support me in the decision to be done with 2. I really don't think I would pursue any aggressive treatment.

I'm still a believer in just waiting my turn.  But I have the patience of my 4y/o who want Christmas to come - like NOW!

I ovulate every month (temps and OPKS) and have beautiful 30 day periods but after 3 years of trying, not trying, denial etc. I called by Gyn/ob.  I did all of my testing with her to find out what is wrong.  We agreed that once the testing phase was complete I would go to an RE.

You may not need to pursue anything agressive.  You may have a firbriod blocking a tube or your hormones may be off.

If you are comfrotable with testing with your OB start there.  Find out what the problem is then talk to your DH to see what you are both comfortable with regarding treatments.  Definitely look into an RE if you go forward with anything type of treatment.  Good luck.

One would think, but I'm a regular girl, ovulate on time every month, etc and obviously have issues (except after m/c when I can't seem to start my friggin period) . One thing to keep in mind is that most REs will repeat all testing that an OB does, so you have to pay twice, and it costs you that much more time. If it's been 6 months, I would call someone (OB or RE) to get started. My OB recommended my RE to me.

Thanks everyone for all your imput!  I meant to put that in my reply....

I guess I should talk to DH and see what his feelings are first and foremost.

    Again, Thank You!!

    Curly,

I agree with MAH. My cycles are absolutely perfect and so are all of my levels. The doctor had no explanation except for the age of my eggs. Set a timeline on how long you guys are wanting to possibly wait for baby # 3 and then decide how much more time you want to spend at your OB. My RE did the basic testing and made recommendations and then we would decide what we wanted to do next, Your OB had 6 months, I personally would go on to an RE. My OB only ran testing for about 3 months and then sent me to an RE because he knew they would have better testing and I would also have to pay for everything twice. My OB sent me after he did my HSG and found my tubes totally fine. You will make the best decision. All of us had different experiences. Good luck!

That was my line of thinking too. I had talked to my OB during cycle 5 and agreed that we'd do some testing in cycle 6 if necessary.  I got PG at cycle 5 and ended up m/c, so we did the testing the next cycle following m/c. My CD3 came back great, so we are giving it a little more time.  I felt that after 2 kids conceived with no help and good inital test results, we could wait a little bit longer.  I did at preseed this cycle b/c I think I have scant EWCM and we were very diligent about DTD during the fertile week, something that's not always easy for us with 2 kids in the house already.  We'll see what happens now, not sure if I'll ever go to an RE b/c at this point we might stop TTC #3 as we're starting to feel like our window of opportunity has passed.

I'm new here and new to TTC but I thought I'd add my experience thus far if it helps you.

For me (TTC#1 age 41), the first time I mentioned it to my ObGyn she said "get scheduled with an RE".  Just b/c of age.  In the meantime she asked if I have reg. periods (yes) and if I have O symptoms like EWCM and middlepain (yes and yes).  Then she had me tested for Thyroid and Progesterone 7DPO.  P came in low so she Rxed progesterone vag. supplement.  If AF comes on Thursday (hoping for BFP instead!) I'll test for FSH 3 days later.  But Thurs is also my first RE appointment so I'll let you know what other tests happen/get planned.  Good luck to you!!
