Trying to Get Pregnant

UTI while TTC, anyone?

Bad timing!!!! Sad  I'm on day 15 and starting to have symptoms (frequent urge to pee, burning with pee).  Besides the fact that our frequency may slow down for a bit, does anyone know if this will hurt my chances of getting pregnant this month?

Also, any ideas on how to prevent these.  I've always been good about peeing right after sex, but now I'm trying to wait 20-30 min before getting up.  I'm sure that and having sex more often aren't helping!  TIA!!!

Drinking plenty of liquids and taking a cranberry supplement (which you can buy over-the-counter at any pharmacy) and/or drinking cranberry juice will help you prevent UTIs.

Most girls will recommend that you do not wait long after sex before getting up to pee (as this can increase your chances of getting a UTI).  If you are prone to UTIs, i'd get up relatively quickly to go to the bathroom after sex.

  • Cranberry juice will help prevent them. I believe you can also get it in pill form if you don't want to drink it. Good luck!
  • I definitely wouldn't lie there for 30 minutes after having sex, get up and go pee! The smart sperm get to where they need to be quite quickly :)

  • I feel your pain! I got a UTI last cycle. I have UTI issues, and here's what I've done:

    1. Drink lots of water and pretty much only water. Sugar helps infections/bacteria grow. I only have one serving of soda/tea/other liquid a day.

    2. Take a cranberry supplement, but know that they aren't all equal. I take AZO supplements because 2 pills is the same effect of 9-10 glasses of cranberry juice. They're the most concentrated out there, and they're discounted if you buy from amazon and buy multiple packs.

    3. Definitely pee and shower after sex.

    4. When I'm in my fertile window, I also make sure to shower before sex, and I even have DH do the same. Like I said, I get 2-3 a year, so I'm more cautious when I know I'll be having sex frequently.

    5. Try to time sex earlier in the day or night, at least 3-4 hours before you go to bed. That way you can drink lots of fluids and get in some cranberry pills and hopefully have a clear bladder before you sleep for 8 hours.

Great info, Brit.  Thanks!  I'm going to check out the supplements.

  • They're definitely worth it! (The AZO). I take 2 after I sex along w/ a glass of water and make sure to pee again before bed. And then I take two more the following morning just in case any bacteria were getting any ideas! The key is to flush out any potential bacteria before they've had the chance to make a home in your bladder. Once they've done that, you're screwed and you need antibiotics.

So, it sounds like I'm probably too late for the AZO this time....  I'm going to call my dr. tomorrow for meds and pick buy some AZO.  You obviously know this, but UTI's are not fun and I'd love it if it could help keep me from getting another one!

Yep, the AZO (and my whole post up there) is all about prevention. Once the infection is at the point of causing burning and discomfort, it's probably too far along to be flushed out. The cranberries help by making sure that bacteria can't attach to the walls of the bladder. But usually by the time you can feel it, it's too late and it's time for antibiotics.

I learned it the hard way! It's all about prevention.

  • Oh, and OP, make sure you mention that you are TTC so that you can get a pregnancy-safe antibiotic like amoxicillin! There's nothing wrong with being on the safe side.

  • Yes!  I am seem to get them all the time and often when TTC. The best advice I can give is to drink lots of water before, then pee right after and follow with couple more glasses of water.  Clean that bladder out afterwards! That has helped me tremendously when TTC.  Also make sure if you drink cranberry juice, it is 100% juice and no sugar added....

Thanks again brit - I will definitely mention that when I call!

cupcakes - Unfortunately I had been drinking reg. cranberry juice, but after reading the earlier post about sugar stopped. Thanks!
