Pre Potty Training?

DS is 18mos and obv not going to PT anytime soon. But I want to make sure I am doing the right things so we'll be ready when the time is right. He has pretty obvious poop cues as he's going so we usually stop by the bathroom on the way to get a new diaper so I can remind him that he'll eventually use the potty instead. Now, if I see him pause and make a soft grunt - I ask are you going/did you go poo? Sometimes he will run in the bathroom and look at his potty, but that is after he's already gone...I can't really catch him beforehand and I don't want him to think that you go to the potty AFTER you poop -lol. I also have no idea how to catch him tinkling so I can make him understand that you pee in the potty too.
