Was Dr. Seuss on drugs?

I love Dr. Seuss and grew up reading his books. But now that I'm an adult reading them to my boys... woah!

"This one, I think, is called a Yink. He likes to wink, he likes to drink. He likes to drink, and drink and drink. The thing he likes to drink is ink. The ink he likes to drink is pink. He likes to wink and drink pink ink. SO... if you have a lot of ink, then you should get a Yink, I think. "

An excerpt from One fish two fish red fish blue fish -the craziest of Dr. Seuss. I want an imagination like that but think it would require some LSD.

  • Haha : )  Very true.  They sure are fun to read to the kids!  The kids are always so quiet when we read those books... they're probably trying to figure out what the heck we're saying!

  • Ditto! I wondered the same thing. Some days I feel like I want a little of what he's having!

  • Dr. seuss worked in publishing i think, he thought that the kids readers "see jan, see ***.  See *** run, see jane run.  See *** and jane run" was super boring for kids to leanr how to read.  So he used the dolsh word list (kids beginning words) to make his books using the same high frequency words but made them a lot more entertaining. :)

Sorry can you tell i miss teaching:) I have to go pack up my Kindergarten classroom today:( and say goodby to my class,  I let the sub use my stiff and today is the last day of school....now i am on to my new job a SAHM :)

  • Mine love the Foot book, DH however hates Dr. Seuss. He had to write a paper in school comparing one of his books to communism (I think) and since then he refuses to read them. I agree that I would have to have some LSD to think up some of the things he did.

Interesting. Makes sense, though. Sorry you had to say goodbye to your class. You'll have three babies and a toddler that will reap the benefits of your teaching skills and will love to listen to you read Dr. Suess, though. I only work 2 days a week but wish I was a complete SAHM. Enjoy!

  • My daughter is hooked on The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham right now. Needless to say, as she goes through them, she often has a lot of questions. For instance, she once asked me after I made her breakfast if I could do the eggs over and make them green. LOL! Kids (and Dr. Seuss) are so funny/weird.
  • One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish was one of my favourites as a kid! But yeah, I agree -- LSD required to write that stuff I'm sure.

  • He was more of a political writer than most people know.  I don't think that it had anything to do with drugs, I think it was more of a way for him to talk about topics that were important to him and disguise those ideas with those nonsense devices to hold the interest of the readers.

Also, just because someone has an imagination, I don't necessarily think that means that they are taking drugs.  I could mean that they didn't forget what it's like to be a child :)
