Crib bedding layers question....again

I registered for, received, and washed the Carter's Keep-Me-Dry Quilted Mattress Pad.  When I think of a mattress pad, I think of one that fits all the way around the mattress (like a fitted sheet).  It's not like that at all.  It's a flat rectangle.  I can't really size it up to the crib mattress yet, as the crib is full of the clothes that I'm sorting and washing...but it doesn't seem that it would fit the entire mattress.

So, I guess I put that on top of the mattress, in the middle, and then a fitted sheet, follow by a sheet saver.  I registered for the Ultimate Crib Sheet, but that covers the entire bed, and it doesn't make sense to me to put that on top of the entire sheet when I have something that's supposedly waterproof underneath the fitted sheet.

I know you're not supposed to make anything too fluffy or too soft, but I have heard of ladies who layer the sheets to make messes at night easier to clean up.  If I do this, do I need more of the Keep-Me-Dry pads?  Please explain this layering thing to me.... again.

Re: Crib bedding layers question....again

  • Our crib sheets are too tight to fit anything around the corners (other than 2 sheets), so what I do is this:

    Mattress
Cut-to-fit waterproof pad (these are VERY thin - and cheap)
    Sheet
Cut-to-fit waterproof pad (if you buy one twin sized, you can halve it and it's the perfect crib size.  Plus it doesn't need to be sewn at the edge because of the nature of the fabric.)
    Sheet

That about does it for me.  Then, when I lay baby down to sleep, I swaddle AND put a thin blanket underneath.

So since these Carter's waterproof pads (and yes they are thin, which surprised me too) come in packs of two, should I just use those, or buy something else and cut it?

You have to understand grr....I have just about no crafting talent!!

  • I'd say see if they'll fit over the crib corners.  My issue is this: Crib sheets are tight (as they should be) so if you can't fit your crib sheets over the 2 layers of thin mattress pads, then you might need an alternative.  If you can, I'm guessing you'll be safe.

  • I only used one mattress cover
    here is how I layered

    mattress
    mattress cover
    sheet
    water resistant pad under DS
    sheet

    that is it.
My girlfriend would do up to three layers because her girls were pukers & leakers. DS rarely leaked through diapers or spit up so I did not have a lot of late night sheet changes

  • mattress
    mattress cover/pillowtop
    water resistant pad
    sheet
    water resistant pad
    sheet

That way, my mattress cover is always clean and soft.
  • Thank you for asking this, I hadn't even thought this far ahead, since we don't have the crib yet! Now I have some ideas on what to do with the bassinet sheets for the time being. Now I need to get some waterproof sheets/pads that fit the bassinet....

  • I just have

    mattress, waterproof pad, sheet

Feels like I am undergunned now...

But my mattress itself is like  that material easy to clean...it's foam.
